Inside The Mind Of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: An Interview

Introduction

Today we have a really special interview, with a band based out of Perth in Australia! The band that seems to be forever on tour Psychedelic Porn Crumpets join us today with their signature psych rock sound! Not only is their band name inventive but so are a lot of their songs. Check out the interview, listen to the songs and strap yourself in for a wild ride!

Interview

First of all how on earth did you come up with that band name?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: A Ouija Board told us. It was the accumulation of lot’s of weird weekends combined.

Lets start with a deep cut , what made you decide to split  High Visceral in half , releasing both a part 1 and part 2?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: I’ve always liked the idea of having 10 tracks on an album, at the time of recording our debut record we had about 14 keeper songs and didn’t want to drop too many, so we planned to have a Part 2 released pretty quickly after the first.

Your song names are both creative and hilarious… As a band what is the song naming process like?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: Something catchy and interesting, and new (hopefully). When we did Part 2 a lot of the working titles got left on the record and Dave Parkin (Blackbird Studios) said he’d heard the song title ‘Coffee & ‘Safe House’ a few times, and me being me thought “how generic are we?!” So after that I made it a point to try and be the only song with that title.

I’m intrigued , what was the state of god when you found them inside a tomato ? + Could you break down the meaning behind the song?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: It was a long time ago but I think it was the first time I’d taken mushrooms, I had some mega trip and when I opened the fridge the only thing that was in their was a single Tomato, and it spoke to me, showed me my futures through a swinging vine and when I came too I was in this universe, so inherently I called it God and if wasn’t him it made the premise for an interesting song.

What about November made you write a song about it ? In the UK it’d pretty much be an ode to how cold it is!

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: Yeah I thought that might get lost in seasonal translations a bit. In Australia, November is usually stinking hot and one of the nicest of our summer months, you’re outdoors all the time, beach, pub, exploring. But if you leave your clothes on the washing line too long they fade, like the dots on a dress.

Your next step along the creative journey was “And Now For The Whatchamacallit” , which song off that album would you say is your favourite and why?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: There’s some gems on that record but I always go back to listening to Native Tongue. Something about those chords and rhythms stick with me. I think it was the first song i used the pitch shifting technique i can’t get rid of. The whole song has a really nice shimmer to it all.

What psych bands would you say have had the biggest impact on your sound? + How is this evident in your music ?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: Tame Impala’s first Ep and first couple of records was such a breath of fresh air. Pond, UMO, Thee Oh Sees, The Beatles, lots of local bands as well, Hideous Sun Demon, Love Junkies, Red Engine Caves. The Perth music scene through the 2010’s was pumping, we spent so many nights out watching a listening to new bands it was hard to keep up, that driving process helped us to have a healthy work ethic with PPC and aimed to write as much as possible, then release what we felt was worthy.

I never thought i’d hear Alexander Flemmings name in a rock song… Can you break down the song “Mr. Prism” a little? What was the inspiration?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: A fun little jingle-jangle that bopped hard and ended with a heavy crescendo. I’d gotten really sick while on tour that year and was frequently visiting doctors trying to work out what i had, after a few visits to some decent specialist I had ‘walking pneumonia’ just before the whole Covid lockdown happened, so I was on penicillin at first and then loads of Antibiotics. Basically I was thanking the creator of those drugs who kept me alive.

Your song “Bubblegum Infinity” really is a great song , so props for that… But I’d like to know if you could blow any shape out of bubble gum what would it be and why?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: A Rhino would be pretty cool if you could master that.

Your latest album “Fronzoli” came out in 2023 , what is your favourite song from the album? And what makes that song stick out for you ?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: ‘Cpt. Gravity Mouse Welcome’, It’s just a beautiful little passage that builds and makes you feel lighter. I was recording a lot of acoustic guitars at the time but that song had the room to keep layering without getting cluttered which is really rare.

How do you know a song is finished?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: You don’t, that’s the curse. I can keep working on tunes for years and probably should.

I found god in a tomato came to me the day I got out of an abusive relationship. I was laying in some grass and this song came on. I don’t think I’ll ever experience that feeling again. Total freedom. Many tears came that day. And I listened to that song on repeat until my friends made fun of me. I didn’t care. It was my comfort. I felt heard and also relief in a way I didn’t know I could. I’m very thankful for that song, even more thankful for this band. It’s brought me many great friends, I love the energy of their shows. Sickens me to know Australia is so far from where I live.

I’m also really damn glad that you managed to get out of your abusive relationship and really sorry you had go go through that.

I am however really glad the PPC helped you through such a tough time with their music!

I often have to hear a song/band a few times before I really warm up to it–with a few exceptions (like the first time I heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the radio–I remember exactly where I was, and how I thought, “WHOA–what is THIS?!!”–love at first listen). I often don’t have the patience to listen to new stuff, unfortunately, unless it immediately smacks me across my head with that same feeling.

But some time within the past year I was doing what I do every night before falling asleep–lying in bed (a little THC is often helpful with my listening), listening to music through my AirPods. My son has a Spotify playlist of songs that have influenced him musically (seriously eclectic)–he calls it an “inspirational moodboard.” With a few of the songs I didn’t know, I was kind of “Meh…next!” But as I was just about to fall asleep something came on that made me force myself awake again so that I could see what it was, because it was SO cool… It was “Denmark/Van Gogh and Gone” by the PPC’s. I was amazed.

Sorry for the long comment, but I wanted to explain that one as an answer to your question! 🙂

Please never apologise for a long comment! Even if our reply might not be as long we take it all in! 🙂

In this case its a comment I love, especially as it means you knew about PPC before we posted this interview!

I totally know what you mean about having to warm up to songs or artists before you’re really into them.

I like the idea of listening to songs before going to sleep too , might be a better use of my time than doom scrolling!

I love that song by PPC too! I really like how they take random enough topics and really turn it into an experiance!

I’m glad you like it! 🙂

(A word of advice from an Old Person–pretty much ANYTHING is preferable to doom-scrolling, especially these days! Thank God (tomato or not) for good music.)

Inside the Minds of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: A Beautiful Madness

Reading Fox Reviews Rock’s interview confirms it: sanity is overrated.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets didn’t just pick a name — they summoned it via Ouija board chaos and bad decisions. Their debut High Visceral wasn’t recorded; it escaped into the world, too big for a single album because why choose between your weird children?

Their songs, like Found God in a Tomato, prove that even your fridge can offer cosmic inspiration — if you’re open-minded (or extremely high). “November” reminds us that in Australia, it’s a sunburnt fever dream, not a seasonal funeral. And Mr. Prism? Finally, a love song to antibiotics.

Influenced by Perth’s psych-rock explosion and probably a few questionable snacks, the Crumpets are the soundtrack for anyone who’s ever stared at a tomato and seen the future.

Long live the Crumpets. Long live the Tomato.

Hey! I found this rather entertaining. Is this an online publication only? Or is there a print version of the Chameleon mag?

Currently where else is this passage you have pasted in here? I couldn’t see it on your site and I’d love to give it some love!

Can I ask that if its online that a link back to this site is given.

      Thanks!
