Exclusive Interview With The Meffs: Punk’s Coolest Duo

Introduction

Normally when a two-piece band claims to be louder than a four-piece I would laugh. There is really no need to laugh here! The Meffs deliver some of the best punk we have heard in years! Fresh from their 2024 album “What A Life” they join us for an exclusive interview. Dont forget to check out their songs and follow them on social media!

Interview

Fox Reviews Rock: – What was it like supporting Primal Scream and Alice Cooper on their UK tour?

The Meffs: – It was an incredible experience playing with both acts and playing arenas for the first time. It felt like we were meant to be there and it got us even more excited for what’s to come.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What are the pros and cons of playing with just 2 of you?

The Meffs: – Cons? None! We’re versitile, we make as much noise as a band twice our size and we get on. We have the same view of where this is going to go and that’s the most important thing, which I guess could be harder if there were more people with different aspirations.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What is your favourite Alice Cooper song?

The Meffs: – ‘Elected’ is the song I remember hearing when I was little. My dad has the original ‘School’s Out’ record too and that’s an iconic song.

Fox Reviews Rock: – We loved your cover of Breathe by The Prodigy, what made you cover this song?

The Meffs: – The Prodigy are from around our way and we’re big fans of their music. I remember saying to Lewis a few years back “we could cover Breathe”. He was unsure at first but I played the riff and within minutes it was agreed that we would be covering Breathe at every show from that point! Listen out for our intro song on the WHAT A LIFE tour, another reference… I would love to work with Liam one day.

The Meffs – Only Human (All Rights Are Retained By The Meffs)

Fox Reviews Rock: – What are your plans for the future?

The Meffs: – We have our WHAT A LIFE tour coming up in January through to April. We start with the UK on 22nd January for seven shows then head out across mainland Europe. Here’s a spoiler, Ireland is happening in April… Then it’s festival season and another run of headline shows later in the year. It’s another busy year.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What was it like working with Frank Turner?

The Meffs: – Frank was a great producer. It helped that we had become mates by the time we recorded WHAT A LIFE so the process was easier as we were all comfortable with each other. We came with the ideas and he tweaked where necessary, and things just clicked. He’s been a champion of The Meffs for a couple of years now.

Fox Reviews Rock: – We really love ‘Broken Britain, Broken Brains’ can you tell us more about this song?

The Meffs: – This was the title song of that EP and the first song we released when we signed to Fat Mike’s new label. It’s also a song that has remained in our set since its release because it goes down so well live. Those two EPs focus on British politics but this song is essentially saying that whilst Britain is broken, so are we.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What is your favourite venue that you’ve played at?

The Meffs: – We played Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo recently. That’s bucket list stuff.

Fox Reviews Rock: – Who are your musical influences?

The Meffs: – I find this hard because I don’t know. I always looked up to was Joan Jett, especially when she was with The Blackhearts. Same with bands like Hole and L7, their attitudes and music are on point. I think I’m more influenced by what’s going on around me; society, politics. That’s why I fell for Crass. Since last year though, SPEED are in my ears non-stop.

Fox Reviews Rock: – Who is your favourite Pokémon and why?

The Meffs: – Best question in any interview ever. Eevie has an irregular genetic make up and can’t evolve naturally, then when it does evolve this depends on what stone it is given. It can become a fire, water, leaf, ice, electric, etc, Pokemon depending on what it is influenced by. There’s something sick about that. It mirrors real life. People grow up differently depending on the opportunities they are given and their surroundings. Stop me, this Pokemon chat is getting deep.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What’s been your best and worst experience playing a show?

The Meffs: – We love playing live so it’s rare for us to not come off saying “that was well good”. Berlin with NOFX playing to thousands of people was something else, but then Berlin playing to a sold out Schokoladen (100 capacity) the year before was just as special. The Bootleg Social followed by Rebellion Festival 2024 were two of our favourite shows ever.

Once I got grabbed from behind on stage by a bloke who thought he was funny. I kicked him off the stage and unfortunately he got back up uninjured.

The Meffs – No Future (All Rights Are Retained By The Meffs)

Fox Reviews Rock: – If you could be a fictional character who would it be?

The Meffs: – Barbie.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What’s the music scene like in Essex?

The Meffs: – It varies across Essex I think. You’ve got places like Chelmsford and Colchester with cool venues and some new bands coming out, but like anywhere, the scene is up and down. It all depends on what type of music is popular at the time too. From what I’ve heard there’s a decent death metal scene at the moment.

Fox Reviews Rock: – What was it like making your first album What a Life? What is your favourite song from that album?

The Meffs: – We were adament that we wanted a full-length this time as the songs all go together as they should. Our favourite songs are probably DEATHWISH and ONLY HUMAN. We’re playing them both on the upcoming tour so that’s exciting.

The Meffs – Deathwish (All Rights Are Retained By The Meffs)

Fox Reviews Rock: – What is your dream festival to play at and why?

The Meffs: – We’re playing Mighty Sounds this year, that’s definitely up there. Glastonbury too. I don’t care what anyone says, get us to Glastonbury to destroy Billy’s stage! In a good way.
