Falling Empires’ Keelhaul: A Deep Dive Review

Introduction

If you love your music to be filled to the brim with emotion then this is the band for you. Bringing heavy riffs, combined with thumping drums and both clean and scream vocals Falling Empires deliver! Falling Empires have previously featured on the site as our song of the week with “Enough.” You can read that post here.

Falling Empires – Keelhaul (All Rights Are Retained By Falling Empires)

The track opens with a melancholic vibe, reminiscent of the scenes in a teen angst film during a location change. This isn’t a criticism; the guitar evokes an out of body like sensation that I find strange but enjoyable.

As the drum gradually comes in, it delivers a powerful THUMP that grows stronger with every beat, making my heartbeat along with the rhythm. I appreciate the way the song transitions and the drums play a massive part in that. I must confess though that I’d have liked a little bit less hi-hats throughout the song. On the other hand, I absolutely love that chugging bass! It’s substantial enough to enhance the track without overwhelming it.

The first instance of vocals possess a delicate, almost fragile quality, blending seamlessly with the instruments without dominating the sound. This combination fosters an atmospheric experience rather than an aggressive presence.

As the song unfolds, you can sense the tension building, lurking just below the surface like a sea creature hunting its prey. The beast finally emerges at 1:15, delivering powerful and intense vocals. I appreciate how the screamed lyrics remain clear and recognizable. This track gives me nostalgic vibes reminiscent of We Are The Ocean.

After the chorus, a fantastic guitar solo emerges, leading into vocals that are still soft but more pronounced than before, likely to sustain the momentum that was built earlier.

I love the part featuring the backing vocals; the mixing here is superb, with each vocal layer fluctuating in volume subtly, it gives the song a wave-like quality.

This is only added to in the closing verse, where the band opts to layer the vocals even more. At first, I struggled to fully understand this part, lacking clarity. However, everything changed when I played the song through speakers instead of using my headphones. This shift not only brought the required clarity but also infused the section with heightened emotion.

The screams added depth, conveying a sense of desperation and anguish, which beautifully contrasts with the clean vocals. These clean vocals enhance the wave-like feeling and fill in the emotional gaps. It takes a few listens and the right equipment to truly appreciate it, but once it clicks, it all makes perfect sense. We were fortunate to receive an explanation of this final section from the band.

“It’s like a culmination of the themes in the song, the brutality of life and just being dragged along under the waves by it, hopelessness because we’re under the influence of something greater than ourselves…then the acceptance of it and letting the storm take you…but at the same time there’s still that little bit of hope, whether warranted or not, shining through…its like all the feelings fighting each other in a shipwreck, stormy seas surrounding you, do you hold on or just let go”.

I am fairly certain that in time this bands listeners base will explode! They have everything it takes to make it.

8/10

Skillet is not one of my favorites because I don’t like listening to his music. I will put up a Red song up for you, so you can hear it. Red is like metal to me. I like one of their songs. Sometimes I like heavy metal. I would call Red heavy metal. Have a good day. Be safe. I can’t wait to talk to you about all types of music because I like to learn more about it.

Thank you for all your help. I like metal. I like rock. Christian music is my favorite type of music. I really enjoy listening to some music that is not Christian, if they don’t say sinful things in the song. I am going to go back to chill with people. Hopefully to hear from you soon. It is a nice day, today. I am happy.
