Introduction
What is better than 1 brother in a band? In this case 3! The Family Rain join us today for an interview with their signature blues style alternative rock. 2024’s “Indulgence” ended the 10 year wait for a new album. We could not have thought of a better time to chat!
Interview
You want us to trust you because you’re a genius … But if you had a specialist subject other than music, what would it be and why?
Good Question! It would be different for each of us – Tim would be graphic design, Ollie would be languages and Will would be poetry. If we had to choose one subject that all three of us are specialists in though, it would probably be Mario Kart!
There was a mammoth 10 year wait between Under the Volcano and Indulgence. Why was the gap so large?
Not one specific reason really, a combination of the fallout of leaving a major record label and not having a management team around you to help guide you through that process (they left when the label did!). Covid also played its part in delaying album releases, as well as other people coming along, getting involved and essentially wasting more time. It’s been educational!
In that time frame how would you say you have changed as people? And how does this influence your music in new ways?
We’ve become more individual – when the last album came out we were all still living together, now we have our separate lives. It has made us appreciate each other more and respect what each of us can bring to the band.

What lasting impression do you want to give your listeners?
We just want people to enjoy the music and art we create – we hope it makes them feel good and gives them hope in what can feel like a hopeless world at times.
What’s your favourite song from Indulgence and why?
It’s hard to pick a favourite because we are equally proud of all of them – but innocence is a track we are all fond of because it is essentially all live and we feel like it best captures the rawness of what we are like when you come to a show.
Gasoline (Track 2) from Indulgence recently appeared on the BBC series The Jetty. What was that like, and did it make you want to watch the rest of the series?
It was a nice bit of news to receive! Our publishers have been really great with this album and we really appreciate the work they do in trying to get our music out there. This one was great for us because a lot of our placements are in the US, so we can necessarily tune in to watch, but we could with The Jetty. It’s on the list of series to finish watching when we have the time!
As a trio, how do you decide who gets their own way, I imagine rock paper scissors is out of the question?
We just fight it out. We’re brothers, it’s what we do!

Speaking of rock paper scissors, what is your go to move?
Rock, of course, it’s what we live for.
If you had to describe your sound in a sentence, what would it be?
The Beatles but heavier.
Binocular from your debut album is a great stripped back tune. Could you go into a little more detail of what the song is about?
It’s about seeing your ex with somebody knew and being deluded enough to think that the new person will never make them as happy as you did.
If you could play a gig on another planet, which one would it be and why ?
If it doesn’t have to be in our solar system, then one of those planets in the universe that are similar enough to earth that there might be life and we could go there and pretend we are the Beatles and release all of their albums as our own.
What’s next for the band now the 2nd album has come out?
We’re getting straight on with album 3… like you’ve mentioned, we’ve got to make up for lost time.

Say you’re at an open mic night , what song would be your go to song that isn’t your own?
Tom Jones – It’s Not Unusual.
What is the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you at a show?
Someone got up and read a poem about us before we came on stage once. People have also ran on staged and kissed us, but that’s happened so many times now that it doesn’t feel so strange any more.
You’re faced with the devil, he challenges you to a rock off… What riff of yours are you playing and why?
Sabertooth – it’s a monster pure and simple. The devil wouldn’t stand a chance.
