Review

Reflecting Light and Causing Chaos is a full-throttle statement from Dead Rat Society, bursting onto the London electronic-punk scene with the urgency of a fire alarm in the dead of night. From the first track, the album is unapologetic and incendiary, every beat designed to hit deep in your chest, every synth saturated with purpose. It’s chaotic, bold, and bristling with a nervous energy that never lets up.
I’ll admit, EDM isn’t usually my thing. But what hooked me were the punk elements: raw, relentless, and stripped of pretense. That’s what brought me in, and in that space, I found myself actually appreciating the electronic textures layered beneath. It’s a rare blend that doesn’t feel forced. Instead, it feels earned.
Listening through this album reminded me of discovering Sleaford Mods for the first time. There’s a similar spirit here: that spoken-word snarl, the minimal yet aggressive beats, and the sense that every lyric could have been scrawled in frustration on the walls of a pub toilet. Like the Mods, Dead Rat Society feels less like a band and more like a state of mind.
Tracks like “Leave With Care” and “Little Victories” reveal a band that knows when to lean in and when to pull back. The closing track, “Dream River,” pulses with melancholy and restraint, showing they’re not just about chaos, they’re about control.
Dead Rat Society doesn’t just mash genres together. They harness the friction between them to spark something new. For me, it’s punk that opens a door to EDM. For you, perhaps the other way around. Perhaps, something else entirely. And that is what makes this ‘Reflecting Light And Causing Chaos’ so compelling.
