New Rock Roundup Vol 2

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

YUNGBLUD – Zombie.

Yungblud – Zombie (All Rights Are Retained By Yungblud)

A beautiful slow number from the artist that is certainly moving away from being just a fleabag… Honestly this gets even more catchy the more you listen to it!

Special Mention: Rise Against – I Want It All .

Metal

Avatar – Captain Goat.

Avatar – Captain Goat (All Rights Are Retained By Avatar)

A band that I have never really enjoyed live… But that doesn’t stop this being a really cool metal sea shanty! Well done to Cozzer for mentioning it in last weeks tunes!

Special Mention:Woe, Is Me – Devil In My Mind .

Metalcore

After Hour Animals – Bad Dream.

After Hour Animals – Bad Dream (All Rights Are Retained By After Hour Animals)

A cracking clean vocalist , and really solid breakdown section too. It is the first time I’ve ever heard the Wisconsin band but it wont be the last!

Special Mention: The Amity Affliction – All That I Remember.

Punk

Special Features – Che Guevara T-Shirt.

Special Features – Che Guevara T-Shirt (All Rights Are Retained By Special Features)

Yeah this was a special mention last week… It’s my feature i’m going to do what I want! I love how defiant this song is, the Aussie band a one to watch I think.

Special Mention: Pig Pen – Rabid Beach.

Pop Punk

Free Friends – Toxic Trait.

Free Friends – Toxic Trait (All Rights Are Retained By Free Friends)

Somehow feeling fresh in a genre that usually has its sound confined to the usual same old same old. Not to mention its really fun!

Special Mention: Youth Fountain – Tarnish.

Alternative

The Gravedigger’s Son – Self Inflicted Wounds.

The Graveigger’s Son – Self Inflicted Wounds (All Rights Are Retained By The Gravedigger’s Son)

When I saw only 400 monthly listeners on Spotify I thought it was a joke. A cruel joke. The dark broody vibes of this song , with the fuzz of the guitar… This isn’t just getting added to the playlist its going into my liked songs!

Special Mention: Errands – Smile.

Indie

Foxwarren – Deadhead.

Foxwarren – Deadhead (All Rights Are Retained By Foxwarren)

I really like the playful nature of the guitar as well as the harmonization of the singing in various points. The song doesn’t remain confined to its lane and that’s what I enjoy the most about it.

Special Mention: Artesan – Bloodstain.

Fox’s Ranking

1st Place: The Gravedigger’s Son

2nd Place: Yungblud

3rd Place: Foxwarren

4th Place: Special Features

5th Place: Free Friends

6th Place: After Hour Animals

7th Place: Avatar

I saw Foxwarren live at a festival like for years ago. Their debut album is so different from the song you shared which is light and more pop sounding. The first album is slowcore heaven from start to finish.

It sounds completely different so I’ll have to spend some time listening to the album as a whole. I’m not a bits and bobs sort of listener. Sort of like every time Radiohead comes out with a new album. I hate it first listen until I drop into the layers of it, than I fall in love all over again.

I listened to the whole thing while doing dishes. I’m interested as to what the old movie samples are about, whether it was inspiration for the song itself, or just a threading concept. Bold for a sophomore album. It gives me a weird feeling of lo-fi jazz fusion with the ghost of early Sufjan Stevens. I will listen again with headphones for deeper understanding.
