What Was The Rock/Metal Album That Changed Your Perspective On Music?

For me it has to have been Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory. Up till the point that it was released I was already into rock music sure. Probably due to my dad playing albums in the car by bands such as Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Metallica etc. However while I loved those (and very much still do)… There was something that didn’t feel “mine” about them.

Linkin Park – Papercut (All Rights Are Retained By Linkin Park)

Enter this band that were playing nu-metal with elements of rap, it blew my little mind! With screams that honestly took my breath away and music videos that were both entertaining and shocking. I was lucky enough to see this album being performed in full at Download Festival 2014, and its the only time Linkin Park ever did that. I count myself very lucky. Especially now that Chester is gone. I do hope that Emily Armstrong cements her place in the history of Linkin Park, and I think she is doing a cracking job. But it still feels like a different band to me.

    that was precisely the one I was going to mention! bands have tried to do it before but the hybrid theory lp meshed it together seamlessly. just from an artistic standpoint that album should be considered as one of the best of the first 2000s decade. Mike

        It was the juxtaposition of unrestrained rage and entering my teens. Before then, I was a pop enthusiasts. Listening to that album told me I wasn’t the only angry one out there. After that, it was nothing but metal.

    Definitely a good pick. One of the more influential acts/albums in recent history. Music still goes incredibly hard even today.

    Honestly, for me it was Supertramp. I had herd common bands and rock groups that seemed to have a common sound and Rythm, but Supertramp caught my attention in a different way. They led me to other rare sounds, like Aldo Nova and Nazareth, which also opened me up to music, like Tony Childs and Basia. Now, I have a turn table and listen to a lot of orchestrated albums I got my hands on from an estate sale. I’m a music fan! Nothing like a rainy day, hot tea and Blue Eyes spinning in the background.

      Oh nice! 🙂 Sounds like Supertramp really opened your eyes to other bands music. The best thing? Someone else will have the identical experiance to you with all the same bands but it will have been one of the other bands that kicked it off!

        A Saucerful of Secrets opened my eyes to what could be done with musical instruments and the outlook of my life was awakened to the possibilities of what life could provide. My mind was exploring a different state of consciousness at the time though.

    It’s probably a cliche’, but Dark Side of the Moon. I picked up a copy (on vinyl, of course) based on hearing “Money” on the radio. So I was expecting more of a rock album.

    What I discovered is that this was something more than just rock and roll. This was music from a higher level. The sound effects, the layered vocals, the synths, guitar, bass, percussion, lyrics…it was all so new to me and made me realize that rock music isn’t just guitar/bass/drums and songs about partying and girls. It can be enigmatic and creative, can make me think and feel, and it can push the boundaries of the genre.

        While I like all the songs of the album, the song “These Days” has good lyrics and deep meaning I think.
        I listened to this album quite later after it released but there’s something about many of Bon Jovi songs that touch me in some way.
        Destination Anywhere by Jon Bon Jovi is also a good album I think.
        The phase of listening to only rock music lasted a few years back in those days and then I switched to other genres over time.
        Today I listen to many genres of music including some of my favourites in rock 😊

    A lot of the music I listened to I wound up listening to because of my brother. Even when it came to listening to Linkin Park. It wasn’t until Good Charlotte (I can’t even count how often I got picked on for listening to them) and My Chemical Romance came out that I felt like I truly had music that was mine. It wasn’t until a little later that I started to get into heavier stuff, but I feel like those two were my entry way.

      I think those two bands hold a special place in music for a lot of people. I know personally that Good Charlotte was that punky edge that i was missing at the time , but also slightly more pop like than some other bands out there but in a good way it was catchy! My Chemical Romance shocked me on first listen with how honest they were , still a favourite of mine and a band i cant wait to see one day!

    The album ‘Lateralus’ by the American rock band Tool – It was released in May of 2001.

    This metal music literally blew my mind! I hadn’t heard anything that sounded like their style of metal music before. I would call it ‘mystical progressive’ or even ‘futuristic metal’. I’m a HUGE Tool fan! 🌟

      Tool is something I am not lucky enough to “Get” but I will be trying again later this year and see if my brain can take on board the awesomeness that I know must exist.
