Which Rock/Metal Song Has The Most Powerful Lyrics?

So I interpret this question to mean the most powerful impact within a band, no idea why but I did. In this case I’m shooting for “Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way”.

The song if you didn’t know is about the breakup between band members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Throughout the song is a stream of honest raw emotion, and consciousness in its purest form. Seriously if you are looking for the perfect breakup song this is it! Yeah move over ABBA!

The particular lyrics that always stick in my mind are the following.

“Tell me why, everything turned around – packing up, shacking up is all you want to do.”

To make it even more personal Stevie Nicks actually sings backing vocals on this track! Ouch… Talk about sending a message!

    I love Bowies lyrics but I think Width of a Circle for me is sublime. How many other songs refer to Khali Gibran? I know Bowie utilised the cut and paste method to write lyrics, but as far as I can tell this song is about a sexual liaison with another guy. It’s dangerous and evokes such brilliant metaphors.

    Many of Bob Dylan’s songs, certainly. Here’s a lyric from “Buckets of Rain”: “Life is sad/life is a bust/all you can do/Is do what you must.” That always hits me powerfully, along with this other line from the same song: “I’ve been meek/and high like an oak/I’ve seen pretty people/disappear like smoke/friends will arrive/and friends will disappear.” I don’t always fully understand the lyrics, but I feel them.

      Bob certainly found a way to make people feel lyrics even if at first the meaning is not the most obvious!

    Before my ear could accept the many parallel worlds of all metal, I was a huge Megadeth fan. I was able to see them twice live, and both times they were glorious. So, here are my metal lyrics for your opinion poll:

    “You take a mortal man

      Yeah I have always loved those lyrics myself! To think in a parallel universe Megadeth would have never existed! That would have been such a damn shame.

    Off the top of my head, ‘My God’ on the Jethro Tull ‘Aqualung’ album has powerful and thought-provoking lyrics – and it also has some great guitar work (in relation to another of your posts). Actually, on the subject of guitar work, any of Keith Richards’s great opening riffs (‘Brown Sugar’, ‘Start Me Up’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’ for just a few) would do the job. 🙂
