What Is Your Favourite Guitar Solo ?

For me the greatest solo of all time has to be by London born Saul Hudson. Better known as Slash. An integral member of Guns N’ Roses its his work on Sweet Child O’Mine that really gets my blood pumping!

Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’Mine (All Rights Are Retained By Guns N’s Roses)

The solo starts off slower , almost in a laid back style. However the 2nd half is bluesy (which I love) and aggressive, oh so aggressive. How he managed to make these notes somehow feel otherworldly too is one hell of an achievement.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dani California (All Rights Are Retained By Red Hot Chili Peppers)

A special mention also to the outro to Dani California by The Red Hot Chili Peppers… Wow

Let us know your favourite guitar solo in the comments!

I have to say anything by Hendrix. I once visited the Handel/Hendrix House in London. There was a cool elderly German Jewish attendant there dressed totally in black. We started speaking in Yiddish & she told me about the moment Clapton heard Hendrix for the first time in a small London club. As Clapton left, he just said “fuck”

That’s what I thought hearing Hendrix for the first time.

    Every time I think ‘fuck’

There is a tiny little part of me that still believes that Jimi Hendrix was either an alien or someone sent from the future to teach humans how to play the electric guitar

Hendrix was a genius and really had his own style! 🙂

Thinking of Clapton reacting like that has made me spit out my drink in laughter!

Oh really! That is interesting, and the best solo by another band that you do like ? 🙂

It’s not so much that I don’t like Van Halen, but I have other bands that are probably more my favorites.

And I know that this will not go over well with a lot of people, but I think I prefer the Van Hagar era

I could only narrow it down to 2, and I can’t really pick which one is 1 and which one is 2 so we’re gonna call them 1A and 1B 1A is Comfortably Numb and 1B is hotel California

One I always loved and keep going back to, even now, is Mike Wilton and Chris DeGarmo’s weaving of the solo in Queensryche’s “I Don’t Believe In Love”. There’s just something they latched on to with that and DeGarmo’s whammy bar in that just requires you to put it on loop. It gets me every time. Sheer perfection, in my opinion anyway 🤘🏻

And a band that deserves a hell of a lot more love than they get!

Absolutely agree brother. I have always loved Ryche. They were always tight and on the money. Epic live as well

I agree! Saw them live , and “got it” , maybe its a live experience that is needed for those that don’t.

I agree. In a similar vein when Lynch Mob first came out I loved Dokken but was underwhelmed with Lynch Mob’s first CD. A buddy got tickets to see them at a club. I didn’t want to go. Was I glad I did. They kicked serious ass- to me anyway, Lynch Mob was one you HAD to see live to really appreciate. CD didn’t do them justice at all, but a brilliant live band.

Yeah I think there are plenty of bands like that too , never hit it big because people dismiss them off records.

This needs some thought, so I’ll sleep on it. Eric Clapton’s ‘Layla’ had some great guitar work though. Watch this space. 🙂

Oh my God, I have so many! But two that spring to mind are:

    1) This Fine Social Scene by Zero Seven, but I have no idea who the guitarist is (Google didn’t help). It’s just gorgeous.

    2) Dave Navarro’s solo in Walkabout by the Chilis. Just the laziest, coolest sound ever.

Sidenote: I also love any guitar solo in any Pixies song ever.

Oof, tough one … like asking to name a favorite star in the sky. But if I had to pick just one? David Gilmour’s solo on “Comfortably Numb” (especially the second one). It’s not about speed or flash … it’s “emotional architecture”. Every bend … a scream, every sustain … a prayer.
Pure soul poured through six strings.

Other close contenders depending on my mood:
*Prince – “Purple Rain” (live versions will melt your bones)
*Eddie Hazel – “Maggot Brain” (10 minutes of cosmic grief and glory)
*Derek Trucks – any live solo, but especially “Midnight in Harlem” (slide guitar turned to gospel)
And who can end this list without …

*Stevie Ray Vaughan – “Texas Flood” (straight from the gut)

    my 2 cents 🙂
