Which Rock/ Metal Album Has The Best Production?

For me I think this has to be Pink Floyd – The Dark Side Of The Moon.

The producing of the album was done by the band themselves with real hands on approach, its a masterclass in recording studio wizardry! Especially when you consider it was done on analogue too…

It’s got that real smooth dynamics throughout and at the time the synthesizers and effects used were truly ground-breaking. Without ever going into too much territory. Including loops and echos perfectly it really does create a soundscape.

Finally the bass and drums fit the songs perfectly , it gives the vocals the chance to shine, nothing competes for your ears. I would love to know what you think the best produced album in rock and metal is! Let me know in the comments!

    I know nothing about production, but I do know that I’ve loved this album from the time it was released up to the present day and beyond. I could name other albums I love, but how well-produced are they? I havwn’t a clue. 🙂

    I completely agree with you. Dark side of the moon is a perfect album, in my opinion. Another album that is a close second for me is Tommy from the Who.

    And don’t forget Alan Parson’s was the engineer. He received a Grammy nomination for his work on this album.

    Dark Side over the Wall any day. Parsons should have won the Grammy for his engineering. First time I heard his other “Project,” I thought it was Pink Floyd under an alias.

    I agree with you, dark side of the moon is my second favorite album of all time is my number two favorite album with Abbey Road by The Beatles being number one.

    And by the way, it were talking about great albums that are Rock ‘n’ roll or heavy metal I’d have to say that Paranoid by Black Sabbath is probably one of my favorite albums as well.

    I am not going to argue against Dark Side’s amazing production. It is a perfect album. However, my answer to your question is Another Green World by Brian Eno.

        The studio work is amazing, especially that it was done in a basement. cohesive songs. It worked as a group of parts that made up a solid single entity. It was too bad though that that was all they had. From Wikipedia: “Defying Epic Records’ insistence on recording the album professionally in Los Angeles, Scholz and Boylan deceived label executives into believing the band was recording on the West Coast, when in reality, the bulk was being tracked solely by Scholz in his Massachusetts home.” So yeah this one’s just about the production.

    Nah, just kidding. But it’s a really tough question. Could name some top producers (Mutt Lange is worth a mention for his versatility, from Boomtown Rats to Def Leppard to Shania Twain; Butch Vig too) but…

    For me a well-produced album should capture the spirit of the music. All elements should be balanced but it can’t be too tame. I really dislike the Phil Spector sound – to say nothing about the man – because the production kills the emotion (see She’s Leavings Home). So in essence she best produced albums are the ones where you don’t notice what’s going on beyond the control desk.

    So I guess I’d divide this in two: ‘electronic’ production, where effects are essential to the sound like NIN or Garbage (and a mention for George Martin on songs like Strawberry Fields) and albums where the intention is to make the band sound like it’s in your room. For the latter category my vote goes to Surfer Rosa by the Pixies

    Great album… now that I think about it, I think this might have been the first full album I ever spent money on that wasn’t newly released at the time and wasn’t a greatest hits album. (I bought it in the mid-90s when I was 18 or 19, I think.)
