How Do You Discover New Rock Music These Days?

As someone who consumes a lot of music , this is hard to answer purely due to all the different ways I get hold of it. I’ll go through a few ways though in the hope others might also use them to find awesome new artists!

Radio

When I am driving I love to listen to radio stations like Kerrang, Radio X & Planet Rock. These stations are varied enough for each of my moods. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a track and immediately had to find somewhere safe to pull over and find out more about that particular band!

Rock Communities

I was approached by the head honcho of a rock community a while back now, Dingir Zu. They are a bunch of smashing people who all love rock music and share the songs that they enjoy listening to. The community itself has over 200 bands signed up and there is a weekly radio show, which honestly is THE BEST. Find out more by clicking this.

Spotify

One of my favourite things to do is listen to Spotify and add songs to my liked songs list. I then go to the home screen and go onto the playlists that it auto generates for you and find even more songs that I like. Another tactic I do is find a band I know I like and purposely let the songs run out, Spotify then auto plays similar music, try it out!

    Word of mouth from my musician friends, music blogs like yours, and a streaming station on the ‘net called NYTheSpirit.com, owned by R&R Hall of Fame DJ David Marsden that features a host of “free-form” guest DJs.

        I know “repeats” are a complaint about streams, like richardbist has mentioned here, but David prides himself in guaranteeing you won’t hear the same song twice in at least 24 hours. He owns upwards of 10,000 recordings, so that works out nicely.

          10,000 recordings is mad!

          I’ve always thought about doing a 1hr show once a month just so highlight the bands from that past month but I doubt it would get an interest!

            Do it! You will regret it otherwise. You may be surprised how popular it becomes! A neat summary including audio is a great idea for those who may have missed some of your posts or unable to listen to the Spotify links you provide. I think it’s a great idea!

    I find that streaming is too repetitive, so I tend to find new music through my local college radio station. They have a lot of great themed shows every week and play an amazing variety of music.

    I love Spotify and that you can share playlists there with your friends. I usually find a lot of hidden gems that are auto generated for me!

    I tend to use Youtube, and any other service besides Spotify bc I find their constant begging for subscribers to be bothersome.

    Usually these days I’ll type a song in Spotify and just see where it leads me. I’m listening to a lot of old stuff these days, so it’s interesting to see where it leads me. It’s annoying tho when it *insists* I listen to Neil Young. I never liked him and keep hitting next but it keeps pulling him up

    Being a) old, and b) a parent, my life is over. But over the years I’ve fallen for support bands (Divokej Bill, Nothing But Thieves), festival randoms (Catfish and the Bottle men, Jurassic Five), college radio (The Wombats)… Word of mouth still works, as do reviews. I’ll also make a point of listening to festival stuff on TV, because why not?

    My biggest influencers have definitely been my siblings, and then my wife, and my mate, though. And now my daughter is into Taylor Swift, so there ain’t much hope for me

    I’m not a streamer. I just don’t get it. I have all my music ripped from the CDs on my computer, and that’s a lot of tunes.

    One thing I miss is Kerrang samplers. Many happy hours left behind there

      Nothing like a good support band which captures your heart!

      Nothing wrong with listening to music from festivals on tv i do the exact same on a yearly basis!

      Haha there is still time to save your daughters music tastes yet!

      Honestly streaming is a lifeline for me purely because of how quickly i need to be able to listen to a new bands music that they want to send me etc.

      I miss Kerrang tv !

        Yeah, I get that. I guess streaming is pretty vital for you. I just dislike the way the bands get such a pittance per play, and I don’t trust the providers not to suddenly take away your faves like they do on TV/movies all the time. And they host all these podcasters that I find objectionable – he says, being very careful with his language.

        Again, whatever works for whoever. But I like albums. I like to experience the music as the artist intended, with the art and the original sequencing. I don’t want random track selections, and I don’t want them intercut with other artists. As I said, I’m old. And Taylor Swift is alright, actually ☺️

          Yeah I totally understand that viewpoint on streaming too! But it’s also worth looking at it the other way in that smaller bands are getting their music into people’s ears that otherwise would never know they even existed from the other side of the world too.

          Quickly hides his podcast plans and runs away!

          Yeah I also love a full album when I get chance which these days and with a 1 year old is not often haha!

          Taylor swift old school was good… newer blah haha! Each to their own though!

                Good list! Was thinking of The Beatles too, and Bowie (though there is a hit-and-miss element there too; one of my favourite tracks is Time Will Crawl, off his allegedly worst album).

                My list would include REM – everyone raves about their early stuff and I think their later stuff is seriously underrated, especially their swansong Collapse Into Now.

                New Model Army’s post millennium output seriously beats their first three albums (1984-86) – I get mocked because ‘they all sound the same’, allegedly. But their writing gets better and better.

                I’m sure there are loads more; Radiohead could be argued, though The Bends is still my favourite. A case could be made for Blur. Led Zeppelin, though maybe they peaked an album or two before the end.

                Will probably think of loads more as soon as I hit reply!

                    I don’t get Zep. I’ve tried several times but just don’t find them that interesting – I’ve had this argument with devotees. They’ve some good/great tracks but nothing seems to touch me. Same with The Who. Not knocking either band or their importance, I just personally can’t connect.

                    How about Throwing Muses? I’m late to the party with them but I think Sun Racket is amazing

    I don’t bother listening to anything new. I sometimes listen to Big Thief, who I love, but apart from that, there is very little I want to listen to past the 1990s
