New Rock Roundup Vol 5

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Foo Fighters – Today’s Song.

Who does not love new Foo Fighters? They are likely on the wrong site… I however LOVE Foo Fighters so when this dropped last week I was super excited. It has a really solid feel good factor about it. I can imagine this song being a part of their set list for a very long time.

Special Mention: Dropkick Murphys – Chesterfields and Aftershave.

Metal

Mannekin – Attention.

This might be my new obsession… Swedish based Mannekin certainly grab my attention with this song haha! I love the heavy metal vibe to the song without the vocals needing to be over the top harsh. It has really powerful riffs and a melodic edge I wasn’t expecting.

Special Mention: Rise Of The Northstar/LANDMVRKS – Back 2 Basics.

Metalcore

Saving Vice – Airplanes.

What is not to like! Seriously this was a hit when it was done by B.O.B ft Hayley Williams from Paramore. But there is just something about when bands cover songs and make them their own. This is exactly what Saving Vice have done here, this is chef’s kiss!

Special Mention: The Comfort – Blossom.

Punk

Napoleon – The Storm Comes Crashing In.

This weeks punk song comes with a strong post-hardcore flavour. Despite being named the same as a diminutive French leader there is nothing small about these guys! This Canadian outfit are one to keep an eye on!

Special Mention:Teethin – DUD.

Pop Punk

The Failsafe – The Ballad Of Mona Lisa.

The 2nd cover on this list, and incredibly great! I loved the original but there is just something about when pop goes punk that really grabs my attention! Ok maybe calling Panic! At The Disco a pop artist was a bit harsh , this really adds the punk to that.

Special Mention: Suckerpunch – Bite My Tongue.

Alternative

Big Other – New World.

Sometimes you need to take a look at smaller bands to really find a gem. That is what I have unearthed here. Sure it could probably also fit in the indie section too it hits the alternative category for me perfectly.

Special Mention: Bubb – Liar.

Indie

Doom Gong – I Wanna Get Dim Sum (With Friends).

Indie with a really cool vocal flow to it, I will be keeping tabs on this band moving forward for sure! It also has this really cool funk like vibe to it that I cannot get enough of! Ps now I really want to get Dim Sum!

Special Mention: Radio Free Alice – Empty Words.

Fox’s Ranking

1st Place: Saving Vice

2nd Place: Foo Fighters

3rd Place: Doom Gong

4th Place: Napoleon

5th Place: Mannekin

6th Place: Big Other

7th Place: The Failsafe

Let us know if you agree with the ranking and the comments about each song!
