How Has Rock Music Shaped Your Identity?

I think for me rock music has given me two things.

A Defiant Nature

Rock music is all about denying the norm, standing out and loving that fact. The reason rock speaks to me so much is that not everyone is listening to it. It naturally fits in with my rebellious nature, I don’t want to do what you tell me to do. I want to do what I want to do!

A Want To Be Accepted

On the flip side rock music really drives that instinct in me that I need people. Which sort of goes against the first part but it works… Every time I step into a gig venue, or festival, everyone else is there for the same reason. To listen to great music! Creating this website to talk rock music with people shows me not only that people have massively different tastes than me when it comes to music. But also that they are also similar, and we all want to feel like we belong.

I want to know though , how has rock shaped your identity? Let me know in the comments!

I’m a Doc-wearing, tattooed, red-haired, rebel senior. The music has given me permission to be who I am, and the courage to carry it out. I hope to be a positive influence on my grandson to where he feels comfortable in his own identity, not made out of the expectations of others.

I love that you know who you are , and want to make sure your grandson is who he is too 🙂 And that rock music has played a part in this 🙂

Rock music didn’t just shape my taste—it helped shape me. I was a quiet kid growing up, a real introvert. The kind who kept to himself, mostly on the sidelines. But once I started going to rock concerts, something shifted. For those few hours, surrounded by total strangers who were just as amped about the music as I was, I felt like part of something. People around me—my little corner of the crowd—became instant friends. That sense of connection didn’t end when the show did. Little by little, it carried over into the rest of my life—at school, in social situations. I started coming out of my shell.

And yeah, it helped with the whole talking-to-girls thing, too. Not gonna lie. I met a few at those shows who, let’s just say, cured me of my awkward phase. You get the picture.

By the time I hit 17, it was 1978, and I was fully in. We started traveling for shows—either to catch a favorite band again or because they weren’t stopping anywhere near our town. My best friend was a die-hard Stones fan, and we followed them like a mission—from Pittsburgh to Phoenix and wherever else they hit the stage.

Some people might call that a misspent youth. But me? I call it a damn good one. Full of stories, soundtracks, and the kind of memories that still echo!

I totally understand , I am a pretty shy guy , but there is just something about a rock gig/festival and makes me feel like I am with family 🙂

The picture is painted very well haha!

I call that the best type of youth! Thanks so much for sharing your story 🙂

If someone were to make a movie about my life it would probably have a soundtrack, better than the one from Forrest Gump.
I have always kind of dressed in a posh version of 90’s grunge. Instead of a flannel, though I do often wear one, I would have an open button up oxford shirt with a band tee on. Always liked my Pink Floyd, Darkside of the Moon tee. I still often wear graphic tees but I think it is also a generational thing, being a product of the 80’s. It has been a while since I wore big black boots but I loved wearing my combat boots, even with a suit. I seriously need to get a new pair and a motorcycle jacket and maybe some aviator sunglasses, lol.
Yes I know, talking about fashion but music fueled my fashion sense I guess. I was born to rock and I will end with a great rock anthem on the day I go.

I think so many people’s fashion choices are at least in part impacted by the music they listen to.

Granted I would say that as 90% of my wardrobe is band t-shirts and black jeans! haha

As with many people, rock music fed the rebellious side of my nature, helped me express the part of me that didn’t want what societal norms wanted of me – it still does, all these years later. I didn’t want marriage and children, and although I married – a fellow rock-lover – I never did the children bit. He followed a ‘conformist’ career – gotta pay the bills somehow – but the music fed the real us, the weekend us. I listened to the ‘Yes’ album and ‘A Passion Play’ while doing chores yesterday – still word-perfect after all these years. Maybe not total rock, but out-there and very me. Long may rock survive. 😎

We were on holiday in Italy last year, and returned to our hotel room the worse for drink. Not wishing to disturb other guests we both put our earbuds in and were rocking around listening to our individual playlists. Surreal, but great fun. We used to go to a bar/eatery there run by an Italian ex-rocker, who played the most brilliant sounds of his own taste on the music system – we just drank, ate, and soaked it up. He also had music nights a couple of times a week, with great musicians from the area. Unfortunately he retired a couple of years ago and his nephew now runs the place, but he’s changed things and the music scene is no more. A great shame for us, but life moves on I guess. 🙂

Ah it is a shame, but just think his nephew is doing great things for other reasons i am sure 🙂 I thought your story was going to go on to say you didnt have the earbuds on properly and inadvertently educating others in better music haha

Like a lot of the commenters, I feel that rock music helped me to find my own identity and to push back against conservative ideas of who I should be. It’s made me more thoughtful, more open-minded, and helped me to better understand the world.

Listening to rock from other countries and cultures is like an education set to music.

I really love how you mentioned about it leading you to being more open minded! I feel the exact same. Also you’re right there is nothing better than finding new music to enjoy from other countries and taking in that culture too!

It adds attitude to your personality, gives the way you walk and talk a distinctive style. I think rock music has dramatically changed the way we are as a human race because it has added to it the rock show and rock fans! A whole new way of looking at the world, living inside this loud, exciting sound!

I decided that I loved the sound of rock when I was just 8 but still too young to educated myself on the music, However, I would lie on the floor and listen and watch Elvis on the TV. Dad trying to get my attention realized that Elvis was someone I really enjoyed and attempted to try to imitate his movements to get my attention,
