What Is Your Favourite Rock Album Artwork?

It had to be that one cover that I think perfectly reflects the music. That is really important to my views anyways, but in this case it was absolutely a perfect match!

Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath (All Rights Are Retained By Black Sabbath)

The album is from 1970 and is the self titled album by the legendary (and now retired) Black Sabbath! The abandoned mill in the middle of nowhere, perfectly frames the new and exciting (for the time) sound of Black Sabbath. The fact that they hired a 19 year old woman to just stand there in a black cloak while they messed around with dry ice and smoke machines to add to the vibe makes me laugh too.

This is one of those questions that I change my mind on on a daily basis . Like right now it’s Godsmack’s self titled album cover but Meatloaf’s Bat out of Hell album art is also just right there and of course also W.A.S.P ‘s Crimson Idol is pretty damn good .

Well I would find it very hard to argue with any of those you just mentioned , of the 3 i like the MeatLoaf one the best 🙂

An old one and one of my favorite albums. Styx, Grand Illusion 1977 (the year I graduated) 🙂

Tough choice, I was always a sucker for cool album art, so I narrowed it down to my top 10 or so (subject to change with my mood):

    Jefferson Starship – Spitfire

    Santana – Abraxas

Beatles – Sgt Peppers or Revolver

    Boston – Boston

Pink Floyd – Ummagumma or Animals

    The Clash – London Calling

Alan Parsons Project – I Robot

Queen – News of the World

Donovan – A Gift From A Flower to a Garden

    Frank Zappa – 200 Motels

    The Jam – The Gift

    Cream – Disraeli Gears

    Jimi Hendrix – Axis

Asia – their first album. My mother painted that on the back of a denim jacket for me way back when.

Rolling Stones–Sticky Fingers–I have the original cover where the zipper works.

    David Bowie–Aladdin Sane

    David Bowie–Diamond Dogs–I don’t have the original short-lived censored cover…wish I did!

I had the original ‘Sticky Fingers’ cover with working zipper too, until about 12 years ago when I gave my entire vinyl collection away to a homeless charity that had their own shop. Sometimes I regret it, but I hope they got a fair price for them all and did some good with it.

That was awfully good of you for a worthy cause. When I downsized 4 years ago to move closer to family, I gave up all of my vinyl except my Stones and Bowie albums, even though I no longer own a turntable. You’re a much stronger (and generous) person than I!

Difficult. ‘Sticky Fingers’, ‘Abraxas’ , ‘Aqualung’? And do you remember the Curved Air ‘Air Conditioning’ where the cover art was originally printed on the album itself? It caused problems with playing the disc, unfortunately, so they had to recall and replace with a plain black one. I bet the original would be worth something now, as a ‘ put it on the wall and look at it’ artefact. 😎

Impossible to answer because there are so many fantastic album covers out there. A couple of stand outs include:

    Rush – Moving Pictures

    Yes – Topographical Oceans

    Beatles – Sgt. Pepper

Cheech and Chong – Big Bambu (mostly because it came with a giant rolling paper).

I love the Yes album cover! I have always found the Beatles one a little over rated (personal opinion obviously)
