What Is The Worst Thing About Rock Music?

Gatekeeping, Gatekeeping & Gatekeeping!

Like seriously this is by far the worst thing in rock music and it needs to be talked about more, it is so damn annoying. For those who don’t understand the concept here is an example. Say you’re wearing a t-shirt for a band you like. Then someone comes up to you and asks you to name 5 songs or you are not “A real fan”.

Arctic Monkeys – R U Mine? (All Rights Are Retained By Arctic Monkeys)

I have had this happen quite a lot of times, so imagine their face when I reel out 10 instead and then tell them I run this rock and metal website!

Muse – Psycho (All Rights Are Retained By Muse)

The funniest thing I have heard in ages is a story in the media recently where a woman was wearing a bands t-shirt. Someone came over and asked her to name some songs. The funny part though is that the woman was the LEAD SINGER of the band!

I’d have paid good money to see the colour drain from that idiots face! I want to know though what is the worst thing about rock music? Let me know in the comments!

Loved the “gatekeeping” story! I pretty much exclusively wear Bowie shirts. If someone were to ask me to name some songs, I would hope they have an hour or so to kill…

The worst thing? There’s not enough of it.

The gatekeeping stuff is so annoying just let people like what they like 🙂

That’s hilarious it was the lead singer. I have never heard this term before but no need for it.

When hard working bands don’t get recognition for their music and talent. Like the Grateful Dead ☠️, long live the Dead!

Oh yes! There are bands that are amazing , and get no traction behind them at all it is very annoying!

The business end of it. There’s so much talent out there that doesn’t get recognition because they don’t check all the boxes. Can you imagine a band like INXS being given so many chances at a hit record today? I’m sad about what we’re missing out on.

You know you are totally right! There is plenty of bands that could be much bigger than they are and they are not the ones holding themselves back!

I cannot think of much that is bad about rock, the only thing I can say is that the worst thing about rock music is when it does not sound like rock music…

Yeah that is fair, are we talking when its too heavy , or when its too soft?

Either extreme… but when they try to push some of the pop or soft rock as ROCK, that’s where I draw the line…

Seems fair enough to me, although on the softer stuff as long as it is labelled as pop-punk or soft-rock I’m alright with it.

Right, I am alright with it too. Cheers and all the best.

For me, the worst thing about rock is the slide into corporate conformity, music that’s created based on data and algorithms to appeal to the largest audience possible. Oh, and the influence of AI also taking the human component out of the creative process.

Yep I totally agree with the points here 🙂 AI is something we are actively attempting to remove at least from front view on this site. Sure we dont have time to create our own images for posts like this , but thats why it is now hidden off the main page.

AI has already been used to create songs and I hate that it can do that!

    Gatekeeping.
    You gotta love it.
It’s always some poor schlub who has an identity crisis, and that band you love, unfortunately, happens to be his existential crutch. Gatekeeping. The ego boost for a sad soul who has nothing else. Crutches R Us. If it’s not rock, metal, folk, it’s going to be movies. I pity the fool who tests me on the meaning of Maiden songs. “Sweep the leg,” sensei says.
    Yep, “sweep the leg.”

Glad it isnt just me then! 🙂

The funny thing is rather than being a douche they could be asking what their favourite songs are and why. What album art they think is the best. And sharing what their own views are too.

Sometimes I practice in my head listing songs of bands I like just in case this happens to me.

Funny enough we probably do gatekeeping and don’t even realize it. One time I saw an older woman at work in a Black Sabbath shirt and smiled complimenting and asking what her favourite song was. My intentions were good, only one song but she said she didn’t know any and said her husband gave her the shirt. I was disappointed.

Another thing I don’t like in the genre is peer pressure, people who think yiu need to mosh or drink to have fun at a concert. I don’t do either of those things. Let me have fun my way.

Ah I think in that sense it wasn’t gatekeeping, gatekeeping to me is when there is malice intent behind it 🙂

Yep its all about loving it the way you want! 🙂
