Who Are The Most Underrated Rock Band/Artist Of All Time?

Hmm I think I would have to go with The Kinks… I know what you’re thinking, The Kinks? Underrated! But seriously I think they should have been much bigger than they were.

The Kinks – You Really Got Me (All Rights Are Retained By The Kinks)

Sure they had the huge hit “You Really Got Me” with its beautiful guitar distortion. But the hype quickly fell away due to the emergence of another band, The Beatles.

The Kinks – Lola (All Rights Are Retained By The Kinks)

The Beatles effectively took the limelight that I think at least in part The Kinks deserved! Imagine how many cult bands like Oasis would not have existed in the same vein without their influence. I honestly think they should be talked about in the same sentence as The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc they were that good!

The Kinks – All Day And All Of The Night (All Rights Are Retained By The Kinks)

Seriously if you have not already go back over some of their albums and you will find some of the best rock song writing that is out there to enjoy! Let me know who you think the most underrated rock band ever is!

I loved The Kinks! But as you say, they got somewhat lost in the shadow of the Beatles and others. It was a golden age of music, and I’ll need serious thought to think up any others who suffered a lack of limelight. 😎

Definitely the Kinks. Ray Davies was a prolific songwriter and developed some interesting concept albums.

I think I’d put the Canadian band, Triumph, up there, too. I think they fell under the shadow of Rush, but they were an amazing power trio and Rik Emmett is one of the best guitarists around.

Oooh Triumph is a band I have not thought about for a while which sort of proves your point 🙂

    Interesting question.

I’m not sure what constitutes ‘underrated’ or even ‘rock’.

Whatever, I’ll nominate Grinspoon. When I saw them at the Lismore Showground sometime around 1995-96, I never thought they’d be anything.

They had a couple of decent albums, and quite a bit of airtime here. There is certainly some home-town bias on my part, and I’m not even sure this is a compliment, but I’d describe them as the Lismore/Home Brand version of Greenday.

Yeah fair point both terms can be argued over 🙂

I will have to check them out , as they are a band I am not familiar with 🙂 Thank you!

James for me. There’s a whole bunch of bands from the 90s that didn’t get the recognition they deserved as there was so many great bands about. Cast, Kula Shaker, Lightning Seeds, Black Grape, The La’s, and I’d even go as far to say that I don’t think the Verve were appreciated enough for their music 🎶

Would it be churlish of me to say Oasis as well?!?!? You look at the monstrosity of their comeback now via gigs, merchandise and rerelease albums, the masses are so indulgent. Noel Gallagher said their music will stand the test of time and it has. Best band in the world, EVER!!!

I love the Kinks. My favorite song by them is “Lost and Found.” The video is absolute 80s cheese, but the song is beautiful.

Swervedriver. I don’t think they ever put out the perfect album, but you could (and I did) make absolutely astounding best of. So glad to get to see them after they reformed. Although they now have to work a timeshare with Supergrass for their bassist.

Also Cyclefly. I don’t know if anyone’s heard of them, but I got their second album after a four-star review in Kerrang, along with a Tanya Donelly solo album that was probably in some kind of offer. I adore TD, but her album became completely neglected because Cyclefly were so amazing. I had to grab their first album of a random trawl of a record shop in Dublin and that’s equally as good. Not heard a word of them since. They were bloody brilliant, though
