Both bands were genius, but for me, Fleetwood Mac.

It could just be a generational thing. Fleetwood Mac is more what I listened to while growing up, while The Doors were kind of before my time.

Early days each band had that special quality.
It’s what happened afterwards must tip the scales, then. Soooooooo
I lost touch with the Fleetwoods when they hit big fame, and the Doors began to puzzle me: why was that song? What’s the point of that other one?
All in I’d have to go for the Fleetwoods, on continuing musicianship quality.

That took a bit of getting there!

Doors…there was a hard edge and rebelliousness in them that appealed to me as an early teen. I was crushed when Jim Morrison died and wonder where his music would have taken him…and us.

What would you say made them a great band ?

For me it was their internal conflict as it led to amazing songwriting.

If you made me pick, it would be Jim Morrison of The Doors, because I believe he was a vessel for something far beyond this world. His voice didn’t just sing—it conjured. Every lyric felt like a spell, every performance a ritual. He wasn’t searching for fame—he was chasing the edge of reality, trying to tear through the curtain between life and whatever lies beyond.

The Doors were a product of the ‘60s. Fleetwood Mac a product of the ‘70s especially when Nicks/Buckingham joined. Hard to compare the two and Morrison was in a class by himself.

I love The Doors and would have been interested to see how they evolved over time if Jim hadn’t died, so I’ll go with Fleetwood Mac. They’ve had so many great musicians and really evolved over the years, from an English blues band to a radio powerhouse.

Oh wow, two stellar bands. How could I choose? I think if Jim hadn’t died and The Doors continued to grow and make music then it might not be a contest. But Fleetwood Mac had more breadth and depth and a longer career. So, Fleetwood Mac!

I would have to go with Fleetwood Mac as well for much the same reasoning as Danny*Fantod. However I disagree with his conclusion regarding the Doors longevity – I believe ego’s and drugs would have torn them a part. With Fleetwood Mac Everyone with the exception of Mick Fleetwood had the ability to replace anyone in the band. They could all play and sing = they all had songs that were recognizable hits sung by them. No ones ego could believe themselves irriplacable.

My uncle handed me a cassette of The Doors’ greatest hits back in high school—alongside CCR, the Stones, and Hendrix. That moment shaped my taste ever since. I’ve always gravitated toward music with grit and edge, and for me, The Doors still hold the crown.

Your question brings back memories. Back in the seventies, every evening, I would get a little “elevated” then listen to a couple of songs from “Heroes Are Hard to Find” (“Silver Heels” and “Bermuda Triangle”) and then listen to ALL of The Doors first album. For medicinal purposes, The Doors were and remain the clear favorite.

A classic Rock battle! Here in San Diego we look to the Authority on all things Classic Rock, 101.5 KGB FM.

If you were pitting just the 2 bands themselves and we got to choose from their entire collective work, I would probably go with Mac. I used to have not only Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits, but also their album ” Tango in the Night’, that featured the hit single “Gypsy ‘.

The Doors , however, while I never owned one of their records per se, The Rockumentary feature film with the late Val Kilmer, was the King Kong of rock and roll movies.

Also, one of my favorite CD’S that I had back in the late 80’s was ‘The Lost Boys’ soundtrack. If you ever saw the film, you’d remember the vampires’ cliffside lair that featured a lifesize poster of Jim Morrison. The soundtrack included a cover of ‘People Are Strange’ by Echo and the Bunnymen .

So, tough choice. But, since I am probably more of a movie nerd, I am picking The Doors.
