Song Review: Wilderness States – Eden

Introduction

Wilderness States are a five-piece alt-rock band from Oxfordshire. They are known for their rich soundscapes and the atmospheric rock they produce. While their creation story might have been “An absolute mess” that hasn’t stopped them in creating real chemistry in how they construct songs!

Wilderness States – Eden (All Rights Are Retained By Wilderness States)

I enjoy how the drums kick off this track; I may have even included another round of this before all the other elements were added. That being said the intro’s layering creates a rich atmospheric vibe, while at the same time possessing a pop/indie like quality. This took me by surprise in a good way.

I find the cycling guitar riff very complementary to the vocals, which are beautiful on their own, but together they produce a wonderful effect.

During the chorus, I can tell there are some subtle backing vocals present, but I would have really preferred them to be amped up a little. This would provide real contrast to the lead vocals.

“Can you find an honest answer?”

The start of the chorus section, features sounds rather than words, I feel could have been removed. Incorporating lyrics in this section instead would have enhanced the song’s flow a little more.

However I love the enhanced vocal power and expression in the second chorus, and the guitar in this section is excellent. It flows around the words like a butterfly in the wind.

The bass plays a crucial role in how the song concludes, significantly contributing to the atmosphere it creates. I believe that enhancing the bass throughout would make the song more rounded overall. At times, the lyrics lack audio clarity, and I’m uncertain if this is due to mixing.

There are moments where the flow is slightly off, and if the band could address this, the score would be higher. In addition I feel they need a real hook to get people to listen to it time and time again. It’s a great song though, and I am intrigued to see what direction they go in next!

7.5/10

Lovely. An actual album of this would be great, but (we went and listened and looked on Bandcamp)they don’t seem to be there, yet. We ‘followed’ them so we’ll know when they do. Thanks for the heads (:
