The Darkness & Ash – The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton UK

For today’s gig we drove an hour and half to the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton for our first ever visit.

The venue was easy to get to as it had a multi storey car park. We got inside quickly  and were greeted with the merchandise stand, there were a decent amount of merch from both bands including a Darkness toast shaped stress toy and a signed Ash vinyl which we bought to add to our ever growing collection.

Stress Toast

Opening tonight was Ash, an alternative rock band from Northern Ireland, who were the youngest band ever to headline Glastonbury Festival in 1997!

They opened up with ‘Goldfinger’ which brought the crowd back to the 90s, singing and dancing, continuing with ‘Shining Light’ then Tim (singer and guitarist) mentioned that they played at this venue back in 1994 which got a cheer from the crowd who most likely were there.

Ash

Ash played their new single ‘Jump in the Line’ which is a Harry Belafonte cover which you may recognise from the film ‘Beetlejuice’, this rock rendition was very popular with the crowd as they were dancing and singing to the music.

They finished their 7 song set with hits ‘Girl From Mars’ & ‘Burn Baby Burn’ which was the perfect choice to end the set on a high ready for The Darkness.

Ash was great live and gave a chill vibe within the crowd, we were a little disappointed they didn’t play ‘Oh Yeah’ but hopefully we will see them again in the future.

After getting a drink at the bar it was time for The Darkness, This tour was to promote their new album dream on toast which we have pre ordered on vinyl.

The Darkness started strong, opening with a new song  ‘Rock and Roll Party Cowboy’ followed by the classics ‘Growing on Me’ & ‘Get Your Hands Off My Woman’, this went extremely well with the crowd, with everyone rocking out.

Rufus Taylor (Queen Drummer Roger Taylor’s Son) came off the drums to sing ‘My Only’ we love it when a band mixes it up a bit.

The Darkness

The Darkness played fan favourite hits off their first album throughout the night including ‘Love is Only a Feeling’, ‘Friday Night’ & ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’, this was fantastic for St Jimmy as ‘A Permission to Land’ was one of the first albums he bought as a teenager.

Justin (Singer & Guitarist) interacted with the crowd all night, making jokes and doing headstands, he is a real showman and you can tell her loves it, he still sounds amazing live and can still hit them high notes even after performing for over 20 years

For the encore they played  ‘Weekend in Rome’, ‘I Hate Myself’ & ‘Love on the Rocks With no Ice’ which capped off a great show.

We were a bit annoyed that they didn’t play songs on their second album ‘One Way Ticket to Hell…’ And Back, but it might have been due the band had problems and a hiatus not long after the release.

The Darkness – Get Your Hands off My Woman (All Rights Retained By The Darkness)

The overall sound of the band was very good live, everyone was rocking out, we had a really nice crowd and it was easy to move about, we would happily return to this venue in the future.
