This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.
The Album Breakdown
The 1983 classic is a solid cornerstone for all metal to follow! It was also Dio’s debut with his own band after time with both Rainbow and Black Sabbath, and boy was it worth the wait! Dio not only showed that he could be an amazing frontman but also this album highlighted what he could do given full creative control.
The album art features a demon drowning a chained priest and is as iconic as the songs within the album! The chemistry on the album between Dio, Vivian Campbell (guitar), Jimmy Bain (bass), and Vinny Appice (drums) is another reason why it was so successful. The albums subject matter delved deep into fantasy including related creatures. But also focused on human struggles like temptation and morality.
Highlight Tracks
The anthem from the album, as well as being the title track! It has the most recognisable riff of any song by Dio and has playful lyrics. Which are shrouded in mystery.
Dont Talk To Strangers starts off quiet and soft before exploding with a monstrous riff! This is classic Dio , soft one moment before bringing the thunder.
The most radio friendly song on the album was Rainbow In The Dark, with a catchy chorus and synths. Apparently Dio wanted the keyboard part removing, but it remained. On a personal level… thank god!
