What Is The Best Song By Arctic Monkeys

From the ashes of the weekly song poll rises “What Is The Best Song By”. A very similar segment where I want to know what your favourite song(s) by the selected artist is! You can let us know in the comments!

The best thing is that if you don’t know the artist then you can see both our recommendations as well as those by other people.

Fox’s Recommendations

Here are my top two songs for this band as well as a little explationation why!

1 – R U Mine?

This is up there with some of my favourite songs of all time… The combination of the heavy yet catchy riff. Driving drums and swagger for days on the vocals boy oh boy is this song great. This is on what I would call the best album of the later Arctic Monkeys career. To be honest this is the sound they should have stopped at. With the grit from their earlier music, yet with a heavier edge.

2 – I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor

From the very first note this song hits you in the face! It has the ability to feel pop like, punk like and dancey all that the same time! Alex Turners vocal delivery on this track is excellent as are the lyrics which get stuck in my head every time I hear it! This song felt exactly what a night out in England was, often disappointing but the process was fun!

Fox’s Wildcard

Everyone loves the odd wildcard… It might not be anywhere near their best or well known song but its worth a listen!

Brianstorm isn’t even the most listened to song on its album, yet it lives rent free in my head. The track is quite frankly a drumming masterclass, listen closely to those hi-hats! The song does not let up from the very first note till the last.

My favourite is ‘Fake Tales of San Francisco’. I especially like the line, ironically, ‘And all the weekend rockstars are in the toilets practicing their lines’.

I have to say that I prefer their early work to their later stuff. They were a breath of fresh air when they burst on the scene and they had an attitude and swagger that hadn’t been seen since the mid to late 90s 👌

Yeah their earlier work in general is far stronger in my opinion than their later stuff especially the last 2 albums which SUCK…

Same thing with Jake Bugg. Tbh it’s prevalent with a lot of artists and bands. My personal opinion is that they get signed into these contracts with production companies and they have a quota to meet. They end up releasing half hearted, rushed, mediocre songs so they fulfil their requirements and get their money

I think that take is 100% correct but I also think that they look at other artists and why they are selling well and just copy and paste. In turn lose their identity which made them great originally.

My favourite hidden gem is ‘bigger boys and stolen sweethearts’. I think it captures the melancholic teenage boy experience a lot of people can relate to

i think it’s some of alex’s best lyricism. it’s not their loudest, flashiest song, but there’s this beautiful warm tone, 1/8th note delay & really resonant fuzz in the guitar. while they use similar techniques in a lot of their tracks, there’s something very stripped about this one. “when i’m not being honest, i pretend that you were just some lover” is, i think, the most heartbreaking & beautiful line they’ve ever written. howeverrrrrr “r u mine” is undeniably a great choice, & i have a tattoo based on it, so i can’t disagree with anything you’ve said haha.

The lead singer has an amazing voice that still makes me swoon, lol. Gotta say that R U Mine is so masculine and hardcore, it’s still my fave.

Extra vote for ‘Fake Tales…’ here, plus just about anything else from their first album. But I wouldn’t kick any of your songs out of bed for snoring – they’re all quality. Can I also offer ‘Why’d you only call me when you’re high?’ and ‘Arabella’?

I will stand up for their last two albums. The songs are properly good, and they’re just as interesting lyrically as their early stuff. They’re very different and I entirely get why you don’t like them, and I would be entirely happy if they went back to write AM 2. But, on their own merits, they’re good.

Radiohead, on the other hand, peaked with The Bends

I think I could have easily have picked any of the songs from their first 3 albums to be perfectly honest!

Maybe you’re right and that the style of the last 2 albums just are not “for me”. I will no doubt be giving them another chance this afternoon anyways. Thanks for making me want to give it another look 🙂

Completely and totally fair. No-one should have to listen to stuff they don’t like just because some critic told them to.

I remember the Kerrang review of Megadeath’s Cryptic Writings. It basically slated them for producing the same old same old. And I thought I bet you’d have been just as critical if they’d completely shifted their sound. Bands can’t win – they change and they’re selling out. Stay the same and it’s the same old shit.

We’ve already discussed bands that have improved over time (cough New Model Army cough). It’s hard to do the same thing year in year out – unless you’re AC/DC – because it’s boring. You end up phoning it in, or getting slated by the press, or both.

So you try to change, develop, switch it up. Sometimes it works (Paradise Lost’s One Second). But even when it does you’re going to be accused of selling out, of abandoning the people who put you up there.

Sorry for rambling. Can’t even remember what my point was now. Listen to what you like and to hell with anyone else, I guess

Yep bands are somewhat fecked either way. Either they stay the same and they are “dated, boring etc” or they change and they are slated for selling out!

Haha the point is that we think the same thing just happen to not agree on the best albums by the arctic monkeys 😉
