Review

Like The Sun
Straight in with pounding drums, no time to get our breath here then I guess. With cycling riffs on both the bass and the guitar creating this sound that honestly I could see on a Muse album. I mean that in the best way. I am also reminded of that band in the lower range of the vocals too, they begin almost spoken word before erupting.
“When you go in deep, so tenderly, like ecstasy.”
While it is not so obvious if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics this song is quite clear about sex. Yet has this gentile nature to it too. It is also a lot more melodic in nature than perhaps I had been expecting, with great balance between softness and heaviness. The hooks and chorus are done effectively too. While I don’t think the song has a proper ending , because it just sort of cuts off as a whole this is a really strong start to the EP.
Feeding The Wolves
I like the sound produced here vocally, but I also have to admit I am not sure that the pronouncing of words was as clear as it could have been. Guitar wise this song has a real playful nature to it. Which feels in parts somewhat at odds with the unnerving nature generated.
Where it feels like someone is watching you, and creeps up on you with riffs in places you would not expect. I like the little ambient sounds they have thrown in too. I think the name of the song feeds perfectly back into the vibe they have created too, it is like wolves stalking their prey.
While simplistic that is actually the strength of the chorus, and I am strongly reminded of Queens Of The Stone Age during the instrumental section that follows on from it. If I was to nitpick a little bit I am not a massive fan of the vocals over the top of the instrumental at the end.
Cannonball
Ok so this might be my favourite song on the EP so far… I love the deep, dark chugging riff that infects the ears. The excellent use of bass here, not only keeps the distortion in check but is the bones in which the song is formed around.
Vocally I am reminded of Frank Carter (Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes + Gallows), I think it is the attitude as well as the delivery. The part of the song where it almost cuts out entirely before hitting the listener with this intense wall of sound is done really well!
Lies They Tell You
The song starts with bass deliciousness, top top work! The song itself feels almost punk/hardcore both styles that I really enjoy. Harsh vocals for the first time on the EP are effective and his voice suits it I would say. Sometimes it is better when a song is not overpolished, this is a prime example of that. The rawness is what makes it effective! The repetitive nature lyrically here harks back in my mind back to Rage Against The Machine.
“The lies that they tell you…”
Sadistic
The drums for this track remind me of being around a campfire in a group. Vocally I am not sure I can get on board with the early portion of the song, the pacing feels a bit off. But the guitar work is solid! Eventually you get to these clean vocals which are much better and my mind instantly goes to Sum41 and Green Day, that softer punk like singing. This is a great end to the EP.
Final Thoughts
The EP demonstrates not only the bands ability to change things up between songs but also how to pace them correctly in order. Lyrically I think they did a really solid job , with it making me feel the words.
I am still not sure about having the first song be so obviously about sex and a few innuendos might have hit better there. The final songs clean vocals provide this balance to the rest of the EP, I’d have liked a touch more of these.
Overall though vocally this EP is really strong. If I can be reminded of bands such as Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Sum41 and Green Day they must be doing something right! Even better is when this combines instrumentally with stylings not out of place for bands like Muse and Queens Of The Stone Age. Honestly this is really great!
