From The Archives: 70s Vol 2 – Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

Being a product of the late 70’s Manchester/Salford industrial environment and economic downturn the album is an ode to isolation. The band always had a raw punk like energy about them, but it was transformed into this eerie like sound that they then became known for. The result of all of this is the album felt detached from life, yet at the same time deeply emotionally crushing.

Many consider this album to be a masterpiece but I think there are a couple of weak points. The production at time can make the album feel distant vs what they used to do in live shows. Newcomers to the band will find this album somewhat monotonous I think, unless they instantly get it in which case they will love it.

Highlight Tracks

Easily one of the most energetic Joy Division songs (This must be the song The Wombats were talking about)… It has a real driving bass line, while the vocals have a airy feel to them yet also create urgency. I think this is the best entry point to the albums atmosphere. Probably why they put it as the first song I guess!

Joy Division – Disorder (All Rights Are Retained By Joy Division)

I would say this is the emotional centrepiece for the entire album. The slow and brooding start, which builds into this intense wall of sound is excellent. As is yet again the bass! The vocals are emotional, powerful and attention demanding. This is intense fragility at its best.

I did a re-listening some years back. It seemed to me that the musicianship suddenly went up several notches, but the singing didn’t, it became weaker. I know this may upset some, but it is only one person’s impressions. So there.

Mr. Fox, this is one of your best. I can’t say it better than “emotionally crushing.” Whenever the actors playing Joy Division appeared in the film ’24 Hour Party People,’ they were so good that I felt I was suddenly in a different film! Especially when you contrast them with the fun-loving wankers in Happy Mondays.

I also agree that ‘Unknown Pleasures’ is not the best introduction to Joy Division. And yet no one who loves this band should miss it….”Disorder” and “New Dawn Fades” are sometimes left off the Best Of collections. That’s not right.

Did Ian Curtis’ singing grow weaker before his death? As I understand him, he was falling apart. The poor guy probably spent his life falling apart. I like his singing, but michael9murray makes an interesting point. Plus this is my excuse to listen to Joy Division from start to finish!
