Fox’s Weekly Rock Question Vol 4 – What Keeps Rock Relevant Today?

For this segment we want to ask you a rock related question and have you answer it in the comments section below! We will also give our own thoughts that you can discuss with us.

Question

What keeps rock relevant today?

Fox’s Thoughts

I think you would be hard pressed to think that rock dominates the charts the way it might have done in the past. But that really does not mean that it is not relevant. I have split down my thoughts about why it remains relevant into the following sections.

Legacy & Influence

I think that rock laid many of the foundations that other genres have grown from. For example Indie, Hip-hop, electronic etc all are based heavily in rebellious spirit. Something that rock 100% did first!

Then you have the bands that are cornerstones of rock like Queen, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. These have crossover appeal as well as being legends that keep new people discovering them. Leading them to find other bands and the ball gets rolling.

Led Zeppelin – Black Dog (All Rights Are Retained By Led Zeppelin)
Live Energy

Have you ever been to a live rock show? Man it is ELECTRIC! The raw sound of a rock band live is something that quite simply other genres cannot compete with. With many band members the unity in their sound is unique when performed live.

Arctic Monkeys – Snap Out Of It (All Rights Are Retained By Arctic Monkeys)
Subculture Identity

There is a strong identity linked to many of rocks subcultures, like punk and emo just to name a couple! This self expression keeps others intrigued by those people and more importantly the music that inspires it!

My Chemical Romance – I Don’t Love You (All Rights Are Retained By My Chemical Romance)
Crossovers

By constantly fusing with other genres, think Run DMC & Aerosmith! The genre has constantly been able to find footing even in music that isn’t obviously rock. Pop punk does a lot of heavy lifting as a gateway to harder rock music for sure!

Run DMC & Aerosmith – Walk This Way (All Rights Are Retained By Run DMC & Aerosmith)
Storytelling

I feel like the storytelling of rock songs cannot be understated! Not only from the words but also the combined instruments which can tell a tale all by themselves! An instrumental can tell 1000 words.

Icarus Burns – Minotaur (All Rights Are Retained By Icarus Burns)
Nostalgia & Fresh Blood

The mix of older bands making comebacks, the comeback of vinyl has meant newer people have heard rock for the very first time. The result is new bands popping up absolutely everywhere. And with that? More and more listeners.

While She Sleeps & Oli Sykes – Silence Sleeps (All Rights Are Retained By While She Sleeps & Oli Sykes)
All rights to the songs used in this post are retained by the relevant artists. This site claims no rights over them.

Totally agree with all that you’ve said: plus Rock keeps us young! See Mick Jagger still strutting around the stage in his 80s, plus Keef’s legendary longevity, is proof enough. Wishbone Ash played in Lincoln this time last year, and they’re back next week. Jethro Tull – as in Ian Anderson- is still going, as are so many others of the great rock generation, and we’re still there listening. Rock on! 😎

Rock and jazz will, possibly already facing the same problem as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary music facing: – its popularity and relevance. … and the winner is AI-generated “content music”. 😦

As the song says It’s still rock and roll to me and as long as rockers keep rocking and the oldies still shine I’ll keep listening. A day without rock and roll and is like a day without sunshine,

Rock music has a very rich tradition going back several decades. Although its popularity may have waned in recent years, I see so many talented young artists doing classic rock covers and others producing excellent original songs as well. There is no other genre that matches the pulsating excitement that good rock music provides. Listening to rock is the ultimate adrenalin pumping musical experience!
