Mother Vulture – Treadmill (All Rights Are Retained By Mother Vulture)

Treadmill is the latest single by Mother Vulture and is the next single in what will make up the highly anticipated album “Cartoon Violence”! This song is quick. No. That is not enough. It is absolutely bloody rapid! It has the high speed rock the band are known for but with this dark broody edge to it too. Like being dragged behind a car doing 60mph on a skateboard…

I think the pace while relentless works really well in this case. It gives Treadmill the feeling of moving forward endlessly to get nowhere, so if viewing it purely based on metaphor then it is perfect. And remaining with the pacing at no point do I feel it slips into sloppiness because of it. It feels controlled as well as polished, crafted well and finished.

Vocally this track is every bit as powerful as the bands other songs. Interestingly it starts somewhat slow in comparison to everything around it. With the repetitive “run” being effective before it erupts into the unique styling that I know well from the band. The singer has a tone that honestly is rarer than red diamonds! I find the occasional harshness to be the perfect contrast to the higher notes.

A unique edge this song has is the use of Bulgarian for the 2nd verse, people can google exactly what these lyrics are but I found them to be hauntingly beautiful! The atmosphere this creates is something that I don’t think people would have expected.

I find the bass throughout to be really grounding, which in a song that doesn’t stop to catch it’s breath that is a really great quality. Well done indeed! The guitars are not left behind either, I find them to be both gritty and fully intentional. The drums however are absolutely INSANE but in a good way! I cannot even imagine the intensity the drummer will need to move at when playing this song live to keep up!

There is more instances where I find the lyrics to be really powerful. The first is “Take a thousand steps, then take a thousand more, take a look behind and see you’re right where you were before.” And when combined with “Life Aint a highway it’s a treadmill” it makes sense! The goal in life is to move forward, that goal is always in the distance… When we think we are driving towards it in reality we are actually on a treadmill making no ground at all! Simply treading water trying to survive.

While I think the overall speed of the track might put some people off, those people are not who this song is for! At times the message can take a while to sink in especially when its this quick but if someone doesn’t get it I feel like that is their problem! Finally that elevator music outro might not be for everyone, but it gets two thumbs up from me!

87/100

It’s a shame they’re not performing anywhere close to me, otherwise I could be tempted. Never mind. 😎
