Franz Ferdinand have delivered some of the greatest indie rock anthems of the 2000s — but what is the best song by Franz Ferdinand? In this article, I break down two of their standout tracks that capture the band’s unique mix of sharp guitar hooks, dance-floor energy, and clever lyrics.
From the instantly recognizable riff of Take Me Out to the groove heavy Do You Want To, both these songs are the cornerstone to the sound of the band. I’ll also share one underrated wildcard pick that proves why Franz Ferdinand remain one of Scotland’s finest indie acts.
Fox’s Recommendations
Here are my top two songs for this band as well as a little explationation why!
Take Me Out
With ten times the amount of streams than any of their other songs is this pick really all that surprising? But it has that many streams for a reason it is a cracking song. I love how it starts with a fast and driven guitar, before shifting into a slower section that you can really dance to.
The riff itself is iconic and if you don’t know the song I am sure you know the indie defining riff. The lyrics are cool in that it works as both two people waiting for the other to make their move romantically, and a sniper at work.
Do You Want To
While this song has a catchy riff and a rhythm that will for sure get people on the dance floor. What I love about the song is the way it blends indie with groove. This is done by the bass and drums more than the vocals or the guitar. The lyrics are inspired by overheard phrases at parties and combine flirting and irony in spades. I would say this is the bands best produced track, everything seems to flow perfectly.
Fox’s Wildcard
Everyone loves the odd wildcard… It might not be anywhere near their best or well known song but its worth a listen!
Brief Encounters
I like the change of pace here its more restrained than the previous two songs I have mentioned. It has a lot more mood to it! I think this really shows another side of Franz Ferdinand that personally enjoy and I think you will do too!
