A-Z Of Rock: H Part 1

Welcome to A–Z of Rock: H Part 1, where we dive deep into the legendary sounds that shaped rock music history. Using the alphabet as a fun way to do it!

This week’s spotlight features Heart and their defiant anthem “Barracuda,” The Eagles with everyone’s favourite classic “Hotel California,” and powerhouse vocalist Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage.

Crank up our Spotify playlist and share your favorite “H” rock moments in the comments below!

Band

Heart

Formed by the legendary Wilson sisters (Ann & Nancy) Heart had hit after hit, after hit! I could have picked Alone, Crazy On You for this. But I settled for Barracuda, the salt-water fish for which shares the same name highlights the grit and ferocity of the band! That chug like opening, combined with the driving drums and higher guitar parts makes for one of my favourite openings in a classic rock song!

Song

Hotel California

Whether you love this song for the vocals, the guitar or the amazing production. Chances are you love this song! It is not my favourite Eagles song, which honour goes to Take It Easy. But man is this a cracker! That solo gets me every time… This is why I love rock music.

Eagles – Hotel California (All Rights Are Retained By Eagles)

Rocker

Howard Jones

Howard Jones you absolute legend! The former vocalist of Killswitch Engage (Now with Light The Torch) has this beautiful operatic voice. When combined with the aggression of the rest of the band it was a match made in heaven. Seriously check out the vocal depth this man has. The song itself is the best the band has to offer in my eyes, although that might not be the most popular opinion. Other tracks worth checking out include My Curse and the bands cover of Holy Diver the Dio song.

When I saw “Howard Jones,” the first place my brain went was to the British singer. No one is to blame.

Well if you also enjoy his work fair enough I’d say 😁

One of the things I like about Eagles is how their sound evolved over the years. Maybe ‘matured’ is the better word. Their early albums were dripping with country and western influence, then that California sound seeped in on their later songs. They were great in their heyday.

I can’t vote for anything but ‘Hotel California’, an oldie but goodie with personal memories woven into it for me. Sorry. The others are good but can’t beat The Eagles, for me. 🙂
