New Rock Roundup Vol 20

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Sam Fender ft Elton John – Talk To You.

So I am fairly sure this is the first time I have ever featured Sam Fender on the website. He has this amazing voice that seems timeless to me. The song itself is really beautiful and smothered in emotion. Elton rather than having his voice on the track is the wizard behind the piano which adds his signature sound while still letting it be a Sam Fender song. I love this.

Metal

Sabaton – Hordes Of Khan.

Sometimes you just want to be taken on a fantasy adventure while listening to rock music. Thankfully this has always been something Swedish metallers Sabaton have done really well. This feels every bit powerful as it does descriptive!

Sabaton – Hordes Of Khan (All Rights Are Retained By Sabaton)

Metalcore

Vara Alta – 9th Circle.

For a band with only 210 monthly listeners on Spotify I expect they are about to explode in popularity! They have this really well put together style, with harsh vocals which have this gritty effect to them. Musically it is polished, with melodic elements even before the great clean vocals come in. I get reminded of early Of Mice & Men.

Vara Alta – 9th Circle (All Rights Are Retained By Vara Alta)

Punk

Militarie Gun – Kick.

I love how this song has all the elements of a punk song but slowed down to this really atmospheric effect. It’s a song about kicking someone in the face, yet it feels like a hug. Odd but great!

Militarie Gun – Kick (All Rights Are Retained By Militarie Gun)

Pop Punk

Bearings – Freaking Me Out.

This is crazy easy to listen to. The pop punk style fun is something that oozes from this song despite the songs lyrical nature. For a song about doubting yourself this is really empowering.

Bearings – Freaking Me Out (All Rights Are Retained By Bearings)

Alternative

Asian Cowboy – All That I Dread.

A little short banger to start off your day! I think the drums do a great job on this track. There is also the foundations of a great band here, seriously only 240 monthly listeners? Be one of those cool people that discover something before everyone else!

Asian Cowboy – All That I Dread (All Rights Are Retained By Asian Cowboy)

Indie

The Maccabees – Koya.

This is classic Maccabees easy listening! With big uplifting choruses and feel good vibes. This song is going to be a new addition to the 10 year anniversary of their yet album from 2015 “Marks To Prove It”.

The Maccabees – Koya (All Rights Are Retained By The Maccabees)

Fox’s Ranking

1st Place: Sam Fender

2nd Place: The Maccabees

3rd Place: Bearings

4th Place: Sabaton

5th Place: Militarie Gun

6th Place: Asian Cowboy

It’s a shame Elton isn’t touring any longer (I had the chance to see him live twice), but at least he’s still making music and supporting other artists.

I wish I could have seen Elton! I’d buy a ticket now , I passed up on a couple a few times and regret it.

Militarie Gun & Bearings take the top 2 spots for me but I’m delighted to hear Elton is still making music. 😛

For me the only one that stands out is Hordes of Khan, for sheer out-there difference. I’m no good at saying why something appeals, I just know that it does. I guess Sam Fender, then the Maccabees, after that I’m nt sure, expect that I don’t terribly like Militarie Gun, so that goes last. 🙂
