New Rock Roundup Vol 21

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Foo Fighters – Asking For A Friend.

New Foo Fighters! I have listened to this track about ten times since it came out and I am obsessed… It has the makings to be a real classic Foo’s track which is saying something when you see the other songs it is being compared to in that statement. It is the first song to feature new drummer Ilan Ruben too which really does add a completely different dynamic to things.

Metal

Bad Omens – Dying To love.

Bad Omens are a band that I personally have never given much time to, that was wrong of me. They are melodic, extremely great lyrics writers and know how to construct a song. There is an almost industrial edge , maybe some would say electronic. I think this is one of their better songs so get it in your ears!

Bad Omens – Dying To love (All Rights Are Retained By Bad Omens)

Metalcore

The Devil Wears Prada – Everybody Knows.

Another band I do not listen to often, but I really enjoy how the clean and harsh vocals intertwine throughout this. It has some serious crossover appeal because while the rawness of the vocals are there it is always in the underbelly of the song.

Punk

Speed – All My Angels.

You know what… I went pretty mellow this week on both metalcore and metal so im going hardcore for my punk section! I really like the driving bass and the vocals are something different too.

Speed – All My Angels (All Rights Are Retained By Speed)

Pop Punk

Follow Me Fox – But Our Princess Is In Another Castle!

So there is a couple of things that even on the surface make me love this pop punk tune. They have Fox in the band name instant points from me! But also I am a big gamer and to listen to a really well put together song about the video game character Mario is a win! I suspect these will take off in a similar way to punk rock factory if this is the road they continue to go down.

Follow Me Fox – But Our Princess Is In Another Castle! (All Rights Are Retained By Follow Me Fox)

Alternative

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – The Real Contra Band.

If you want an out there band name well then here it well and truly is! We actually interviewed Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and it for sure was one of the more interesting interviews we have done. Here we have their usual psych rock vibe but it has a little bit of punk flair through in on top which isn’t what I expect.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – The Real Contra Band (All Rights Are Retained By Psychedelic Porn Crumpets)

Indie

The Lemonheads – Cell Phone Blues.

This has the indie feel to it but with a lovely inclusion of blues elements. Not to mention so really cool vocals with both male and female vocals crossing over.

The Lemonheads – Cell Phone Blues (All Rights Are Retained By The Lemonheads)

Fox’s Ranking

1st Place: Foo Fighters

2nd Place: Bad Omens

3rd Place: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

4th Place: Follow Me Fox!

5th Place: The Devil Wears Prada

6th Place: The Lemonheads

Let us know if you agree with the ranking and the comments about each song!

I’m glad to see/hear the Foo Fighters making music. I was kinda curious how much a new drummer would affect their sound, but the new guy really seems to slip right into the groove. New, but still hits the mark.
