Set The Tone With
The premise behind this post type is to get an insight into the daily lives of the bands that we love! We have given them some situations to attribute a song to and let us know why that song in particular is perfect!
You can check out the answers the band gave below, as well as jam out to the tunes they picked. Want to listen to the complete collection from this segment? Click the Spotify link below!
What is the perfect song for the gym?
I actually love listening to psychedelia when I work out. No idea why but I guess it just helps my mind float away while my body’s busy. The song I’m picking here is Cerebral Crack by The Mystery Lights. I love that mix of baroque and garage psych. Saw them live in July and they were incredible.
What is your go to happy song, when you’re angry or sad?
For me, dealing with anger or sadness usually means diving headfirst into the feeling instead of fighting it. So I don’t really have one “feel good” song but I’m gonna cheat and pick three. Ha!
Anger: Old Man Going – The Pretty Things
Sadness: I Can’t Remember – Ryan Adams
Feel Good: Dance – Natalie Bergman (saw her live recently, so beautiful!)
The perfect song to put on while cooking?
Basically anything from my playlist “Dancing Alone in the Kitchen” but if I had to pick one: Canoas by BALTHVS. It’s got that easygoing vibe, with melodies that still really stick.
The wind down song at the end of a long day to get you to sleep?
I’ve got a bit of a Sam Phillips obsession right now – I listen to her daily. Her voice is so soothing and her songwriting is just on another level. To get calm, I’d pick „Five Colors“, though it can feel a bit too sad for actually falling asleep. „Reflecting Light“ is perfect as a lullaby – like she’s hugging you with her voice and whispering goodnight.
The song by Suzan Köcher’s Suprafon that you are most proud of?
That’s tough but I’d probably choose Seventeen. For me, it’s a metaphor for starting to be more honest and fragile in my songwriting. When it came out, I was so nervous – it felt like reading my diary out loud to the world. But the response was so heartwarming. People connected with it and saw themselves in the song, which means everything to me.
Your all time favourite rock song?
What?? How am I supposed to pick just one? Okay, fine – I’ll go with Psychedelic by Johnny Hallyday because I’ve been obsessed with it. I’ve listened to it endlessly and the guitars sound so insanely good it’s unreal.
The perfect song to set the mood on a date?
Hmmm… getting ready to fall in love? I picture that moment of getting dressed – hair, makeup, outfit, the whole ritual. The perfect song for that vibe is „All Dressed Up“ by Kula Shaker.
A song by an amazing local band we might not know about?
There’s this really cool jazz artist from Cologne called Gianni Brezzo. Love his song “Flower Rain”. Perfect for train rides and dreaming yourself away.
The perfect pre show song to amp you up?
If you know me, you know I have a weakness for French music from the 60s. And not just the music – the clothes, the makeup, the whole vibe, plus the films of Jean-Luc Godard. I just adore it. For pre-show energy, I’d go with „On Nous Cache Tout, On Nous Dit Rien“ by Jacques Dutronc. It gives me exactly the I don’t give a fuck energy I need before hitting the stage.
A great song you think Fox Reviews Rock won’t have heard before?
Don’t know how familiar you are with German music but I can never stop mentioning Hildegard Knef and how much I admire her lyrical talent and incredible voice. She has this really profound, piercing sound to her and her writing style is such a cool mix of raw and witty – she paints the most interesting pictures with her words. One of my favorites is „Wie viel Menschen waren glücklich, dass du gelebt“ from her 1970s album because it blends chanson with psychedelia in such a unique way.
