From The Archives: 90s Vol 3 – Faith No More – Angel Dust

The Album Breakdown

This is the bands most ambitious album where they showed absolutely no fear creatively. While the album before it “The Real Thing” had amazing levels of commercial success, the band pushed further here past their alt-metal label. Blending metal, funk, pop like melodies and new found extreme levels of singer Mike Patton vocals. The result was something completely fresh and new!

While the album is experimental, its biggest strength is possibly how it still manages to feel so cohesive. Some for sure will find this new experimental edge too much, while the intentional strangeness can be jarring for new listeners. While overall the album is a landmark album for people looking for a taste of the 90’s some of the songs do feel unfinished.

Highlight Tracks

One of the bands finest songs! Driven by the fusion of sharp drumming and an iconic vocal performance with a real focus on melody. There is an undertone of gothic deliciousness too! While it is complex it somehow also keeps its catchy nature.

Faith No More – Midlife Crisis (All Rights Are Retained By Faith No More)

Not one of the most listened to tracks on the album BUT the heaviest! It feels unhinged, dangerous and deranged.

Faith No More – Caffeine (All Rights Are Retained By Faith No More)

Other Notable Albums From The Band

The Real Thing

King For A Day… Fool For A Lifetime.

This is one of my favourite all time albums! It’s not an easy listen, it growls along, but every track has something to love. A Small Victory is another stand out track, and they added a really cool cover of I’m Easy to the CD release which I bought at the time (listen out for Mike Patton’s ‘oooh!’ that triggers the guitar solo). Love that you talked about this album!

I love that this is one of your favourite albums! How did I do in general as someone who knows more about it than me 😁

Pretty good, I’d say. Patton sang on The Real Thing, but didn’t do any song writing. The fact that he was involved in song writing this time probably helps explain the experimentation with so many other genres, though always with the dirty rock vibe. Midlife Crisis is a good choice as stand out track; I love it. I think this was them at their peak. King for a Day and Album of the Year had some great tracks, but weren’t as consistent.

That is excellent to hear and I really do appreciate your input. They are a band I love but that experimentation does make them hard to pin down haha

My favourite FNM album – witty, subversive, just the right amount of weird. Love the chants on Be Aggressive. Would anyone tell me if I was getting stupider?
