    My guess is 1996, though I could be off by a year. I do remember when KROQ radio in Los Angeles was about to begin its Almost Acoustic Christmas broadcast, but they premiered a new song first from KROQ favorites Depeche Mode. As was the norm at that time, the first single from a Depeche Mode album was ear-catchingly revolutionary (see “Personal Jesus,” “I Feel You”). “Barrel of a Gun” was no exception. My jaw dropped.

      I cheated after the fact and discovered that this premiere occurred during Almost Acoustic Christmas 1996. However, this was NOT when the song was released to the general public.

      TL;DR I was wrong.
