Pink Floyd. They are Premier League and Rush are Isthmian League!

Let’s get this out of the way first up: the answer is clearly Pink Floyd.

I’ve tried Rush a few times and I could stand to listen to more, but there’s a reason Floyd are more popular. They marry ambition and accessibility in a way Rush never managed, I think – though Rush are without doubt better musicians.

Floyd have four or five of the best albums of the 20th century. I don’t think Rush could claim that. Floyd also have the best trivia – for example, did you know that Bob Geldof used Christopher Reeves’ transparent Superman ‘flying’ mould in the film version of The Wall? All Rush have is that they took inspiration for 2525 from Ayn Rand, as horrible a person as you can imagine.

    So yeah, Floyd

Not fair! Two of my favorite bands!

I differentiate them, though. I mean, they’re both prog rock and the bands are made up of top-of-class musicians, but I think their sounds and songwriting are in completely different arenas. They are so distinct I can’t pit them against each other.

I saw Rush 3 times, beginning in 1978 on the Hemispheres tour (mind blown). Subsequent shows were less enjoyable as their style changed.
Never saw Floyd, but did catch Roger Waters’ 2017 tour (mind blown).
For me, this is an apples-to-oranges issue. Love them both!

Another vote for Pink Floyd. While “Tom Sawyer” is an impressive song, overall, I feel like “Another Brick in the Wall” is just overwhelmingly an incredible song.

Pink Floyd never disappoints me, whereas, I feel like Rush has a different sound, but it just doesn’t strike me in the same way Pink Floyd does.
