This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.
The Album Breakdown
This was Deftones 2nd album and a big step forward blending nu-metal elements with alt-rock. It is seen as the foundation for the bands later evolution and is likely the reason why they are known as one of the most influential bands of their era. That being said I do not actually enjoy a lot of their music and have to pick and choose tracks.
Strengths
The dynamic range of balancing big riffs with melodic passages showcases the bands identity. The vocal versatility helps to create the emotional intensity by going between soft sections and raw screams.
Weaknesses
If someone is a fan of their later work then this early nu-metal album might feel dated. The production in places is somewhat uneven.
Highlight Tracks
Pretty much as about signature Deftones as you get. It is built around this menacing riff, verses filled with tension and a chorus that brings release. The quiet then loud dynamic is something the band does a lot of.
This song leans more into the bands melodic side with guitars that gleam and some real expressive vocals. There are hints to shoegaze and post-hardcore which became their future sound.
