Interview
How would you describe your sound in your own words? Also how do you think your sound has developed since you started?
Kayla The Crow: Kayla the Crow sounds like the storytellings of PJ Harvey , John Dwyer and George Harrison . My sound has developed into a combo of rock and ambient, like Brian Eno .
If you had to pick just one song as an advertisement for Kayla The Crow, what song are you picking and why?
Kayla The Crow: Hermit , because it’s the truth.
Where do you find your creative inspiration for your songs? Life experiences, nature, dreams etc?
Kayla The Crow: Creative inspiration comes from the absolute legends that paved the way ( Black Sabbath ) as well as connecting with people , animals and nature.
If you were an actual crow, what kind of mischief do you think you would get up to?
Kayla The Crow: I do like shiny things.
I would love to know, what local bands to you should we check out? South Africa we think is a melting pot of amazing talent!
Kayla The Crow: You should check out Constellatia and Pussy Heaven

In 2025 you released the gloriously fuzzy tune “Sunrise On The River”. What river are you referring to in the song and how was this single received by people?
Kayla The Crow: I wrote this song without a particular river in mind , haha . It seems America and Germany enjoyed it the most.
2022 saw the release of your EP “Water” what made you put out what is effectively an instrumental EP?
Kayla The Crow: Good Question , Water was created over the 2 years spent in isolation , I was inspired by Hiroshi Yoshimura.
Speaking of releases, when can we expect a full album? We are begging for one over here!
Kayla The Crow: Yes , you can expect the next release The Door on the 13th Feb , I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.
If you could collaborate with any musician right now, who would it be and why?
Kayla The Crow: Ty Segall and the muggers , if you watch their KEXP , you’ll understand why.
What’s the most chaotic thing that has happened to you on stage so far?
Kayla The Crow: A chaotic moment was when the power went off mid song at Irish Club in Linden , Johannesburg . I continued singing the lyrics and the crowd joined me in singing until the power came back on.

While we are in the mood of discussing live performances, what do you do before you perform to prepare yourself?
Kayla The Crow: I drink sparkling water 🙂
“Pelargonium Sidoides” We are reliably informed is a geranium found in South Africa… But can you tell us what about that flower inspired the song? And what is the song about in general?
Kayla The Crow: The song is a time stamp for me . I was working at a mill in the Drakensberg where I worked with plants like Pelargonium Sidoides.
How does Kayla know when a song is finished, and when to keep tweaking?
Kayla The Crow: a deadline.
Have you ever written a song at the early hours then the next day binned it? If so, why?
Kayla The Crow: I sometimes write like that. My style of writing is usually melody first , words later.
Finally, you recently released “Hermit” it has this heavier sound to it than some of your earlier songs, was this intentional and is this the direction we can expect you to continue with?
Kayla The Crow: It is heavy , I am very inspired by Ty Segall here. I find the heavy fuzz tones help convey the story.
