This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.
The Album Breakdown
This marked the start of Ozzy Osbournes solo career after he left Black Sabbath. The album is just as well known for Randy Rhoades incredible performances on the guitar as it is Ozzy’s vocals. This became the blueprint for 80’s metal.
Strengths
Randy Rhoads on this album is an absolute machine! Blending inspired solos with heavy as hell riffs. The album blends melodic songs with hard hitting metal energy. Oh and Ozzy’s vocals are iconic.
Weaknesses
At times the album can feel a little bit like following the metal formula. But as he was part of writing that formula personally I am going to let him off!
Highlight Tracks
This is a metal anthem. The combination of Osbourne and Rhoads on this track is musical perfection. The soaring vocals and insane guitar work needs to be studied. Again, and again.
I love the dark and theatrical side to this song. With its haunting keyboards and intricate guitar work. The dramatic vocal delivery creates this ominous atmosphere. I have no fears in telling you this is my favourite Ozzy track by some distance.
