What Is The Best Song By Pixies

From the ashes of the weekly song poll rises “What Is The Best Song By”. A very similar segment where I want to know what your favourite song(s) by the selected artist is! You can let us know in the comments!

The best thing is that if you don’t know the artist then you can see both our recommendations as well as those by other people.

Fox’s Recommendations

So straight off the bat this is the most pop friendly of the hits by Pixies. The upbeat melody just makes it feel warming, this is the gateway at least for me into their stranger songs. Which are obviously good, but without this song I’d have never tried them at all.

Pixies – Here Comes Your Man (All Rights Are Retained By Pixies)

You want some iconic and nostalgic feelings? Then this is the song. Where minimalism succeeds by providing this massive emotional payoff. The chord progression is fantastic too! This is an alt rock anthem. That is not a word I throw around either!

Pixies – Where Is My Mind? (All Rights Are Retained By Pixies)

Fox’s Wildcard

For me this is the experimental side of the band having fun! With massive dynamic shifts and surreal lyrics. It’s that change between loud and soft that Pixies perfected and caused the 90s alt rock boom!

All good selections, but I’ve always been partial to Wave of Mutilation. First heard it on the Pump Up the Volume movie soundtrack.

Definitely Where’s My Mind. Gosh, it brings me back to this unruly teenager who just wanted to revolt against the world for telling me what to be, and what to do. That’s the beauty of music. It can take you anywhere you’d like to go:)

Oh man, this is the hardest of hards. The Pixies have never been about individual songs – the tracks are all so short that their albums are all about the vibes, man. Just pick one of the first two (or three, if you count Come On Pilgrim separately ) albums and be there.

But I think it has to be Where is My Mind? if only for the needle drop in Fight Club. Perfect.

HOWEVER, depending on the day, I’d like to bang the drum for the following:

    Hey

    I’ve Been Tired

Hang Wire (their best hook bar none)

    U-Mass

    Baal is Back

    Dregs of the Wine

I have a weird Pixies origin story. My English teacher copied Surfer Rosa and Doolittle onto a cassette, which was then stolen by his partner, my drama teacher. She gave it to my brother, who gave it to our sister, from whom it passed to me. That cassette was played into oblivion, until I made my own copy. The thing I remember was the bonus tracks squeezed in to fill up the spaces on either side. So it was also my Suzanne Vega, Lemonheads and Inspiral Carpets origin. And also a few tracks from The Purple Tape at the end.

Also also, Surfer Rosa has one of the best covers ever. Fact

Ok so that might be one of the more hilarious music origin stories I have ever heard!

All the tracks you picked are excellent! But I see your point about it being about the vibe for sure.

Jesus, so many but how about this one, maybe a little more Obscure? “Distance Equals Rate Times Time”. My brain is drawn to so much of the repetition in their songs. Quite a few of Black Francis songs that make my brain explode…in a good way.
