Why Are Anthems Such A Big Part Of Rock’s Identity?

Rock was never designed to sit patiently or quiet in the background. From the very beginning it was about being felt, and anthems I feel are the purest form of that. I’d love to know what your favourite rock anthem is in the comments!

The Crowd Is The Point

If a song doesn’t have that little something extra when it’s being sung by 1000’s of voices at the same time then its missing something. The big choruses, catchy hooks are the key ingredient to getting a crowd onside. Somehow in that moment the band becomes secondary, the song becomes everyone’s.

That is the real reason why these songs in particular last, they are not just remembered, but lived.

Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer (All Rights Are Retained By Bon Jovi)

Rock Needs Something To Say

Rock has always had a voice, but anthems are rock shouting at its loudest. It’s where frustration, defiance or something else gets turned up to the max. There is no metaphors here, just straight up expression.

The key thing however is when people don’t just listen to the song they agree with it, they embody it. It becomes part of them.

Bruce Springsteen – Born In The U.S.A (All Rights Are Retained By Bruce Springsteen)

Go Big Or Go Home

If you like restraint then rock is not for you, anthems prove that! Is is where things get pushed further, bigger riffs, louder drums and choruses that feel like they are built to explode. It’s about impact.

Anthems tend to define bands because they are them working at their absolute peak. Not only technically but creatively and emotionally. It’s the music form of going all in on a poker table.

The Killers – Mr. Brightside (All Rights Are Retained By The Killers)

It’s About Belonging (Without Saying It)

This is the part I think people don’t talk about enough, it is truly about belonging. Everyone listening to the song is on the same wavelength and one.

Even if just for a few moments, nothing else in the world matters, it isn’t just the sound its what it does for people.

Nickelback – How You Remind Me (All Rights Are Retained By Nickelback)

I’d love you know though what is your favourite rock anthem, let me know in the comments.

I don’t really know much about Mr. Brightside and Nickleback, I prefer their “Burn It to the Ground” over the one posted. And don’t forget Green Day and blink-182’s anthems!! 😀

They are the cornerstones of pop-punk.

I never ever want to hear that song, Free Bird again in my life and I remember there were days that I wanted to listen to it continuously.

Anthem is usually associated with classic rock, which is not my favorite genre. For that matter Mozart 21st piano Concerto is an anthem of sorts.

What do you think changed to make you go from loving to hating it ?

You’re right it is associated to classic rock but I dont think it stays rigidly in that lane

Anthems for me have usually consisted of choruses, and/or prechoruses that are easy lyrics and memorable. Pretty Reckless did a fun one in the 2010s with Heaven Knows.

People like something that resonates, that they can sing along with, or shout along with. I think some songs just hit all the right notes (no pun intended) and strike a chord with people (pun intended). 😊 🎶

Yeah, I find that the songs that do this tend to share a lot of the same themes, or styles too. But there are some anthems that are completely different and out there too that I love.

Hmm. I’m not sure how anthems are defined or come into being – I guess no-one really knows or we’d be swamped with them. I’m tempted to define them as a band’s mission statement, one that puts the vocals front and centre. Thus I’d say that Metallica has never written an anthem as the vocals aren’t what they’re about (in the most part). I’d say Sad But True comes closest. I’d also reckon that an anthem has to build, to grow through the two to five minutes to end with a different intensity to the beginning. For some reason this often seems to involve strings.

Also: power ballads. Can’t talk about anthems without mentioning power ballads.

    Some more examples:

Skid Row – Youth Gone Wild

New Model Army – any six tracks off Thunder and Consolation

Levellers – One Way (and probably loads of others)

    Bowie – Teenage Wildlife

Queen – We Are the Champions

I’d say that Arctic Monkeys are yet to write an anthem – popular isn’t the same as anthemic, not for me. I’d say R U Mine is their top contender. I’m not sure if I’d call Mr Brightside an anthem either, though I can’t quite say why. I think singalongability isn’t the same as anthemism. Or possibly anthemity.

I shall muse. Ooh, Muse – their song for the Olympics must count, but Plug-In Baby, maybe?

I love your list on songs! And you’re right missing out power ballads in general was an oversight 🙂

However I have to say I really do think Mr.Brightside is an anthem, its the type of song you sign with your mates at the top of your lungs.

Oh, that’s absolutely fair play. I guess I’m trying to say that my definition differs slightly, not that you’re wrong – this isn’t a ‘right or wrong’ type of thing. One man’s anthem might be another’s cheese. Remember (of course you won’t, you’re too young, and anyway you’re far too busy living the muso’s life) when The Undertaker came out to Limp Bizkit’s Rollin’? Never worked for me but presumably someone thought it got people off their feet.

I will say, though, that singing at the top of your voice with your mates is entirely dependent on the presence of certain beverages. I will confess to having been involved in a Take That singalong post-karaoke (I sang Richard Marx because I’m just that cool) in a now-gentrified Norwich pub. But don’t tell anyone, mmkay?

Oh absolutely! Haha I was like 7-9 when he used that song 😛 I am still a wrestling fan to this day albeit I no longer actively seek it out 🙂

          I promise I won’t tell anyone… I swear… Or do I 😉

Does I was Made For Lovin’ You by KISS count as an anthem!? It’s so catchy 👏😝

I’m inclined to say Don’t Stop Believin’ is my favorite rock anthem, but there are a lot of good ones out there, and I would probably have some less cliche answers too if I really sat down and gave it some thought.

Being cliche is no bad thing in my opinion. It is cliche for a reason 🙂
