How did you come up with the bands name?
Honestly we argued for longer than we should have over band names and called ourselves a couple other things before this one stuck. We got to a point where we had to choose something and this was a name we could actually all agree on.
Where are you from?
Cornwall, UK
What genre would you class your music as?
Atmospheric Post-hardcore
For Fans Of?
Deftones, Alexisonfire, Silverstein
Where can people connect with you?
What is your latest release?
This Is The End is the highly anticipated debut EP from the ‘Cornish sons of screamo’ Falling Empires. With a blend of raucous energy and atmospheric sound building, the band introduce and showcase their individual sound through some harsh and emotive themes.
Their lyrical topics with clear nods to dementia, cancer, grief, guilt, the breakdown of relationships, mental health and more show that Falling Empires aren’t afraid to deliver an emotional gut punch…but in the best of ways. Rather than feeling like a spectator, the band pull you in and take you along for the ride.
What are the three songs you would recommend to new listeners?
This song showcases our sound while bringing a catchy hook and sing along choruses. Most likely to be heard on a commercial radio station.
This song is super popular with fans, live audience and critics alike and showcases the moody and atmospheric side of our sound.
A song that showcases everything we’re about all rolled into one. Soft breathy verses, to and fro between soft and harsh, meaningful lyrics about a dark subject matter, guitar solos, big building finish with overlapping vocals, spoken word chucked in for good measure.
What is the song you’re most proud of as a band?
For me (Niall, vox) it would probably be Wamura. It’s the song that means the most to me and that I feel truly emotionally connected to. I still feel goosebumps and can feel the welling of tears sometimes when we play it live.
It’s a funny one because Rowley (bass) originally wrote the backbone of the song and told us he’d written it about a story he’d heard about a Japanese politician that saved a town from flooding etc…….but then I went ahead and wrote my own lyrics and totally changed the theme of it.
It’s a song about loss of loved ones from dementia, cancer, MS etc which is personal to me and to other members in the band. One of the biggest changes I’ve tried to make over the last few years is to try to be more present in the lives of those I love, even if I don’t receive the same level of effort back.
There are people that myself and others around me have lost and there’s regret that I didn’t see them enough or make enough effort to. I carry a guilt inside about not seeing my Grandmother before she passed and I think I didn’t see her for a long while because of the uncomfortable nature of seeing someone that is dissipating due to a disease. Hence why this song is so emotional for me. I hope that that emotion and almost desperate darkness comes across in it.
…it’s also usually our opener to our set and I get to massively rock out when it kicks in so…that’s a bonus too!
When can we expect some new music?
We have a crazy amount of songs being worked on or that we already have finished so we’re looking to be a lot more proficient in releasing new music this year.
Who would be your dream collaboration?
Chris (drums) – Charlie Simpson because he’s just a massive fanboy of Fightstar and it’d be cool
Niall (vox) – a Dallas Green feature, I’m a HUGE Alexis and city and colour fan plus just think how sexy that song would sound.
Rowley (bass) – Russian Circles
Martyn (guitar) – Dr.Dre
Mike (guitar) – The Raven Age
If we’re talking product collabs…surely we need to get an official pasty sponsor soon?
Where can people next catch one of your shows?
Check out our Linktree and socials as it’s ever evolving.
Where can people grab some merchandise?
Bandcamp and ElasticStage links in Linktree
What is the bands goal for the next 12 months?
Just push on as much as possible really whilst juggling our actual real lives outside of the music…hopefully keep spreading our name through putting out good music, putting on great shows and also just being nice dudes that people hopefully like and want on board with their shows and in the scene.
We’d LOVE to play some festivals, that would genuinely be a dream! (So if anyone’s reading…get in touch… we’re ready and waiting).
Then we’d love to do some more shows supporting touring artists that we’re genuine fans of.
Honestly everything we do and have done, every opportunity that comes our way we’re super grateful for and hopefully things keep popping up, we keep having fun doing it and we keep making music we’re proud of.
What is your message to new listeners?
Just to support music in general. If you like our sound and want to support us by listening (on repeat), buying merch (on repeat), coming to see us (on repeat) and telling every single one of your friends, family members, colleagues, neighbours and anyone else who’ll listen that they should check us out then that’s awesome.
But if we’re not then listen to other bands, follow artists, reviewers, venues, promoters etc that are also grinding away in a pretty brutal music system. Follow their socials, like stuff, share stuff, go to local shows. It’s so important for music that we support every level of all the people involved in the scene. So yeah just…support grassroots music (and also listen to our debut EP).
