What Is The One Guitar Riff You Wish You Could Never Hear Again?

For me it has to be Smoke On The Water, purely because of how many times I have heard it! Sometimes after listening to this song the riff is still going around in my head a full day later!

If I had to pick the riff that guitar players most jokingly wish would disappear forever…

It’s also “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple.

That opening riff is basically the first thing everyone learns:
    — simple
    — instantly recognizable
    — and played… endlessly… in every guitar shop on earth

It’s gotten to the point where it’s almost a running joke—walk into a music store, and someone somewhere is playing it, slightly out of tune, with great confidence 😄

Honorable mentions that get the same “please no more” reaction:
    • “Stairway to Heaven” intro by Led Zeppelin (so overplayed it was literally banned in some shops)
    • “Sweet Child O’ Mine” intro by Guns N’ Roses
    • “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes

    But yeah…
“Smoke on the Water” is the final boss of overplayed riffs.

It is annoying as those are all fantastic songs, but the riffs are so over played its just like yeah ill skip that one!

Can’t say I have one that I wouldn’t want to hear again. A decent riff is the hook to get you listening. Sometimes a riff will bring back memories of friends or places. So whilst some can be over used I wouldn’t want to stop hearing them. That said I do have some favourites but that’s for another thread.

I can’t think of one offhand, but you’ve chosen a good one. Having grown up with it playing on every radio station ad nauseum, I can understand never wanting to hear it again!

It’s annoying because it is a great song, but man the riff is overplayed!

For me, it’s Stairway to Heaven. It’s a classic rock song, beautifully done, but so terribly overplayed.

Smoke on the Water…I get it, but it was the first riff I learned on guitar and it holds a special place in my heart. 🤘

There is something about The White Stripes ‘Icky Thump’ that rubs me up wrong once it’s about halfway through…

Sounds like a coked out bag-piper going off in a paddock.
