From The Archives: The Kinks – The Kinks

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

The debut album from The Kinks from 1964 delivers raw, energetic rock that has a distinct Blues edge. It’s unpolished, lively and showcases the bands attitude and early spark. It’s short, with songs full of punch that give it a sense of immediacy. A taster for what was to follow it.

Highlight Tracks

Could this be one of rock’s most iconic riffs? This track oozes energy. Distorted guitar tones give it an aggressive edge, while the vocal give real urgency and excitement. It’s memorable and honestly I think the blueprint for 60’s and 70’s rock.

The Kinks – You Really Got Me (All Rights Are Retained By The Kinks)

A track laden with blues and a relaxed groove. It shows off the bands more melodic side. Davies’s vocals are great, overall the song balances energy with emotion.

The Kinks – Stop Your Sobbing (All Rights Are Retained By The Kinks)

A more reflective song, its darker in nature too. It combines harmonies with guitar riffs that land a knock out punch. It shows early signs of the storytelling the band would go on to be known by. But keeps the albums overall raw energy.

Such a great band, and so underrated. The Davies brothers both wrote some fantastic music.

I got this mixed up with the Clash, my god, only I would do that 🤣 the Kinks are ok, kinda older….. not my vibe, but that’s ok. On the subject of ‘oldies’ I prefer the Doors and oddly enough for a punk fan, the Beatles. (Paul if you are interested.)

One can’t but love the Kinks. They’re “number one, top of the pops!”
