In What Ways Has Rock Influenced Non-Western Music?

Rock didn’t just take over in the West it also spread to the East but locals created styles that merged with their own culture. All driven by Rock’s energy.

It Fuses With Traditional Sounds

Bands such as Bloodywood blend heavy metal riffs with Indian Folk instruments and Themes. “Ari Ari” is a fantastic example of a guitar sitting alongside dhol rhythms and Punjabi style vocals. The best part is it never feels forced.

Another great example is The HU, who mix rock with throat singing showing how rock can adapt entirely to different musical traditions.

It Keeps The Energy But Changes The Voice

Rock’s natural aggression and structure is carried over, but the message becomes local in nature. Cui Jian used it for social expression in “Nothing To My Name”. Whereas One Ok Rock formed it into a modern, global sounding hit with “The Beginning”.

Rock isn’t about being the same, the artists in the East took the foundations and reshaped it into something meaningful to them. Bands like Bloodywood prove that the blend with local identity can create something completely original and more to the point brilliant!

I am not, still using Spotify. Mainly because I get it incredibly cheap and because it would take forever to unpick everything on the site.

I think that’s been one of the benefits of the internet – cultures can learn about one another and influence one another.
