This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

When it was released in 1991, this marked a clear defining moment in the solo career of Ozzy. Metal at that moment was changing quickly, with this album finding the perfect balance between heavy rock roots and a more radio friendly production.

This album feels huge in scope, with thick guitars and a groove that is much harder than his earlier work. The song writing also demonstrates a deepened maturity level that elevates everything. It’s darker and has a real sense of purpose behind it all.

There is new energy in this version of Ozzy too thanks to collaborations on the writing side and a new line-up. The album was not only reinvigorated but defined heavy metal pre grunge!

Highlight Tracks

Without a doubt the stand out piece of the album. The title track features a hypnotic bassline and layering on the guitars. It evolves over time to featuring a menacing melody. Vocally this is haunting but powerful at the same time, it’s iconic for a reason.

This is much more emotional, and to surprise a few it was co-written by Lemmy of Motorhead! It strips away the bravado to show the personal side of Oz. The chorus is massive but deeply heartfelt and puts his vulnerability in the centre of the work.

Back to something a little heavier, Hellraiser gives the listener driving riffs and real anthemic energy. It’s more traditional in metal sound and jam packed with attitude.
