How Has Fashion Intersected With Rock Identity?

The fashion surrounding rock music isn’t just an appearance it is a coded language. The look signals attitude, influences and intent.

Rebellion you can see

Rock styling generally starts with rejecting the norms and pushing back on rules, expectations and nail polish! Punk made this move to the extreme with ripped clothes, home made items and looks that turned fashion into a form of protest.

Belonging and identity

Every single rock scene has it’s own visual identity. When we think of grunge it’s the flannel shirt, glitter for glam, leather for metal… These looks act like a uniform, immediately telling people what type of music you’re into. It’s like a welcome mat to like minded individuals.

Performance and persona

For so many rockers, fashion was part of the act. Whether it’s the theatrical glam, face paint or “effortless” looks that likely took all night. The look over time becomes inseparable from the music itself.

KISS – I Was Made For Lovin’ You (All Rights Are Retained By KISS)

From subculture to mainstream

Rock fashion rarely stays underground, anti-fashion looks like punk or grunge eventually get picked up by fashion designers and enter the mainstream. Only for new scenes to again re-invent rebellion.

David Bowie – Rebel Rebel (All Rights Are Retained By David Bowie)

Fashion in rock is not just decoration, it’s identity. It’s an attitude and a statement that starts even before the first chord.

I think that, in rock music, fashion can define a genre, a band, or even an individual. You provided great examples of each.

There were certainly individuals with their own, immediately-recognisable look. Alice Cooper with his makeup, Ian Anderson with his one-legged stance, flute and wild hair, and Bowie has to take the prize for everything. 🙂

It’s so true! I still am a jeans & rock tee kind of girl…with a flannel on top, of course! It’s comfort, sure but apparently not just physical comfort. Didn’t realize it was signaling my age so much though, sheesh! 😛
