This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.
The Album Breakdown
Dragging industrial rock into the mainstream by its collar with a sound that felt dangerous. Not to mention uncomfortable. With an interesting blend of electronics, aggression and personal song writing. Is it any surprise that the result was a dark yet influential album.
Production wise it feels both mechanical and claustrophobic where distorted drums, static infused guitars and synths collide. Reznor created an album that focuses on addiction, isolation and the total collapse of emotions. An honest reflection.
Highlight Tracks
The opening track immediately throws listeners into chaos with smashing drums, distorted vocals and a whole heap of aggression. It sums the albums dark atmosphere and intensity from the very start.
If you want recognisable and controversial then this might define the entire decade for that. It has an electronic groove and aggressive lyrics. Balancing dark sexuality, obsession and self destruction. This was unlike anything dominating rock at the time.
Closing with one of the most devastating songs ever written. Take the heavy noise and replace with fragile acoustics and a feeling of exhaustion. Exploring pain, addition and emotional collapse in total honesty.
