What Makes Rock Music Timeless?

It Moves With The Times

It is fairly rare I would say for Rock as a genre to stay stagnant for too long. Different ideas, instruments, techniques all move with the times. That constantly evolving not only keeps it relevant but it also keeps things tied to the past. Metal wouldn’t have happened without folk.

Different Genres Capture A Time Period

Rock as a whole remains timeless by creating mini genres within itself that are timeboxed. Think Punk in the 70s or Grunge in the 80s. These new mini genres give rock new life and keep it relevant.

Good Music Lasts

Quite simply rock is a diverse genre that has AMAZING songs. The older bands and songs are still talked about well after they have stopped playing shows. I’d be amazed if there was anyone alive over the age of 20 who didn’t know about say Led Zeppelin, The Beatles etc.

Larger Than Life Characters

Being a genre that attracts life’s more interesting characters, it gives rock that staying ability. People like David Bowie or Freddie Mercury give rock that classic feel. Classics never go out of fashion and more importantly find themselves as key people in pop culture!

This will seem weird, but I think what makes music timeless is that it hits us in the emotions, makes us feel, and emotions and feelings are timeless. We all experience them, we’ve all had those great days and those bad days, and we all relate.

It definitely stays timeless and relevant because it constantly evolves. It never remained stuck in one style/genre. Rock is a living, breathing entity that will live on forever.

I agree that timelessness is at the very heart of rock music. After all, a lot of rock is about rebellion.

But I worry that the genre has been on something of hiatus for some time now.

Look at your post, for instance: the LINKIN PARK song is from last year. Under pressure is 46 years old. Black hole Sun is 30, 32 years old. immigrant song is 54 years old. These are all great songs, but what has the genre were really given us lately?

I’ve always heard that we get better music here in the United States whenever a republican is in office. I thought that we would see some really great stuff in the last few years, instead of reaching back 20 years to use “American idiot“ as a song about political unrest.

I was watching an old ep of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. (It started with a reenactment of the Hamilton-Burr duel). The music was Under Pressure, which made me a bit weepy because I recognized that both Freddie and David were dead too early. FWIW.
