Introduction
We became aware of this little gem of a band last year when we reviewed their single Scapegoat. We were then invited to a show of theirs at Nottingham and were blown away not only by how great they were but how nice too! Today we will give their latest EP a listen and provide our thoughts.
Review
Re: Birth Sequence as an EP thrives on deep contrast. Lo Rays blend heavy riffs, electronic soundscapes and pop hooks with ease. It creates a sound that is unpredictable in nature but never disjointed. While each track brings something different, it still feels like it has its own musical destination.
Having previously reviewed Scapegoat in depth, we wont spend too long on it here. But you can check the review out as it really is one of the bands strongest songs!
Alongside Scapegoat the EP’s real standout moment is Knee High. The dual vocal harmonies make the chorus irresistible. It is also the EP’s most accessible track while somehow retaining the bands heavy edge. It would not take much at all for it to reach a wider audience on the radio.
Continuing the momentum is Playing Both Sides, with it’s blend of electronic & drum and bass influences. While I am not completely sold on the verses, the chorus and crushing breakdown more than make up for it!
The only track that doesn’t quite reach the same heights is Until The End. It benefits still from the band’s atmospheric production and a heart thumping bass. But for me lacks the instant impact of the songs that came before it.
Overall the EP proves to be a great release for Lo Rays. The band continue to push their own sound forward and are not afraid of sticking neatly inside one genre. This is exactly what makes them so exciting of a prospect. There is plenty more to come from the band I am sure of that!
