What’s The Best Advice You’d Give To Someone Younger Than You?

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best advice you’d give to someone younger than you?

This is going to come as a shock to some of my regular readers but I didn’t got to a rock show until I was 20 years old! So my advice would be if you love rock, metal or in fact any music… Go as young as you can!

I look back on all the bands I love that I missed out on because I was not brave enough to go and see them before that age. I look at all the festivals with STACKED lineups that I would have genuinely loved. Don’t have the same regret as me, get yourself to live music events.

My first gig was with papa fox in Sheffield to see a band called Shinedown who have since probably trebled in size! I still enjoy their music and I hope you enjoy this song from their earlier days.

Good answer! I went to my first rock show when I was fourteen, saw Joan Jett and the Blackhearts at an outdoor concert.

I’d also advise the younger generations to explore the world around them. Put down the phone and see the world through their own eyes, not through a post on social media.

Absolutely fantastic answer Richard! Kids today constantly looking down rather than up!

Waiting until 20 for a first gig, from someone who now writes about music constantly, is a proper answer to this prompt – the regret is specific rather than vague. And going with your dad to see Shinedown in Sheffield is a great first one to have. We hauled ours to their first festival earlier than felt sensible, ear defenders and all, and it turns out being slightly too young is the better mistake.

work on how you communicate. Communication has been an issue at every job I’ve ever held and I’m 60. Poor communication caused a divorce. Even when 2 people think they’re saying the exact same thing often times they mean 2 different things. It will help you your entire life if you can communicate well.

Never say you were not born then when a certain song came out. It is exciting to learn about rock and roll in all its forms. Listen to what was happening while you were not in this world, and thoroughly explore YouTube and you will be amazed at all the great music that passed you by.

I think this is great advice , for sure dont just listen to things that are out and about now. Learn about what inspired those artists.

Seeing Shinedown in Sheffield with your dad for your first gig is such an iconic memory to kick off your live music journey! It’s so easy to look back at missed festival lineups, but starting that tradition with family makes for a great story. 🎸⚡️

Well, respect your elders might be one thing, lol. Because yes, you young whippersnappers, you’re going to be in our shoes one day. However, I’d also say find something to enjoy in every single day. Friends, family, music, nature, a good book, learn something new, whatever. Don’t let life go stale.

I love this answer! Although what I will say is that elders these days seem to demand respect when quite frankly they are just rude. When people act rudely treat them how they should be treated, by completely ignoring they exist.

I agree. There is a lot of that going around (rudeness), but I wouldn’t say it’s only elders. I will say that my kids’ generation (or at least their friends–they’re all in their forties) have proven themselves to be unfailingly kind and respectful. It’s a pleasure to witness.

Certainly staying on brand you are.

I believe my first rock concert with Jeff Beck at a small theater in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Generically see as many live shows as you can. I want to show this past weekend. I didn’t know either the bands before this week.

    It was fantastic

Ah well it would be pretty silly to go off brand 😉

It is great discovering new bands isnt it!

Looking back at old festival lineups and wishing you’d gone is so relatable! It’s awesome that you and Papa Fox turned that first gig into an annual festival tradition though. Great advice for the younger generation! 🎟️🤘🏼
