Review
Right out of the gate the title track grabs your attention with a exceptional riff and equally as great drum work. The verses are jam packed with meaningful and socially conscious lyrics that force you to question modern society (something of a theme actually).
Just before the chorus there is a fantastic funk-style bassline that takes over, and is a real stand out moment. I would perhaps go even further with this in the future. I get real Red Hot Chili Pepper and Beasty Boys vibes as the track progresses vocally. Speaking of vocals though the only minor flaw I have is that they sit a little low in the final mix which can means at times they get outshone by the instruments.
The high standard of instrumentation is a constant theme across the record and echoed heavily in Fire In Your Eyes. Kicking off with a marching band like drum pattern the song eventually settles into a more subdued but deeply expressive atmosphere.
The vocal flow fits perfectly with the funky guitar tones until the line “Rid Me Of My Pain” where the band truly take their foot off the brakes. While the bass is harder to pick out in this song, it’s salvaged by the stunning guitar solo. Unbelievably that solo was done in just a single day! The uncompromising approach is exactly what makes “Masses Hypnotised“ such a standout moment on the EP. It opens with a delightfully naughty riff and a thumping drum beat, but what truly defines it is its bluntness. Luna Motif bypasses hidden metaphors, delivering an on-the-nose warning message right from the off.
It is a bold, thought-provoking anthem capped off by a massive, unforgettable chorus. Best of all, the prominent bass guitar is well and truly back on this track, serving as a rich canvas.
Luna Motif takes a brave risk by saving “Ride“, the longest track on the record till last. Operating as a slow burn, it takes some time to get into. However, 35 seconds in, a distinct guitar tone cuts through to usher in a defiant message against external control.
Musically, it is solid as hell, featuring subtle backing vocals, a dynamic range of vocal tones, and an incredibly singable chorus. It stands out as the most progressive and psychedelic offering on the EP.
The track isn’t perfect; at points, the lyrics feel a bit forced to chase an unnecessary rhyme. It also suffers slightly from its extended runtime. I believe trimming it down to around 4.5 minutes would have tightened the pacing significantly. But you wouldn’t dare cut a single second of that guitar solo.
Ultimately, Shapeless Pursuits is a bold, instrumentally stellar showcase of a band that knows exactly how to write an infectious chorus and a killer riff. While a few mixing choices and structural overindulgences keep it from absolute perfection, the sheer musicianship and unapologetic attitude on display make this a must-listen release. Luna Motif has proven they have both the musical chops and the message to back it up, leaving a lasting impression long after the final track fades out.
