What Rock Band Do You Think Is Appreciated Secretly?

Ah! This one is easy… Also I must admit a firm favourite of my own. Sure it might not be cool , in fact for years and years the cool thing was to rip on this band. The band? Nickelback.

Nickelback – Animals (All Rights Are Retained By Nickelback)

I think the band over the years have come in for some serious hate and not all of it is warranted. I get the over commercial songs, I agree on “Rockstar” but come on they are some seriously catchy dudes! Over time I think the stance against them has softened for sure.

Nickelback – S.E.X. (All Rights Are Retained By Nickelback)

I think what I personally like about Nickelback the most is their ability to morph into whatever they want. Do they need a commercial banger to get them back into the limelight? Well then they write one (Not all of them are bad “How You Remind Me” Is a classic). But also they know how to shake it up with the best of them.

Nickelback – How You Remind Me (All Rights Are Retained By Nickelback)

Don’t believe me? Then for the love of all things Nickelback check out “The Betrayal (Act III)” or “Animals” or even “Burn It To The Ground”. Yeah there is plenty of examples but mainstream media doesn’t want you to know. Their streaming numbers along display how much support the band have, I suspect even your buddies who rip on them secretly have jammed to their songs.

Nickelback – The Betrayal (Act III) (All Rights Are Retained By Nickelback)

Lets be honest we all want a few songs to headbang to but on the flip side we want to have a bit of a sing a long too. And this band really are the masters of writing that sort of song… Let me know in the comments if your hatred for all things Nickelback still lives on and why. I also want to know which band you would have picked.

I’m neutral when it comes to Nickelback–was never really sure why they were the objects of such hatred.

    My “guilty pleasure” is Coldplay.

Yeah I still don’t get it myself!

Coldplay , hmm not on my like list , but I totally see why people enjoy them!

Idk about Nickelback. They’re okay. Stabbing Westward… Now, that was a band that was overlooked but still is appreciated today… secretly.

Why do you think they were originally overlooked?

I think they were originally overlooked because, (what it was they third album) that finally broke “big.” Then… industry shifts and cuts left them launched with nowhere to go. They fell apart and their music was pushed less on radios. Ultimately the industry killed the band before they could really be seen… then of course the band’s break-up.

I’ve been a Nickelback fan since I was a teen and never understood the hatred. Alright, we all have our preferences, but it never made sense to me that so many metalheads and even other bands would make fun of them for being too soft and commercial, while secretly liking some of their songs. They opened a show for Bon Jovi here in Santiago years ago and I was SO excited to see them, but I guess we were around 50 people cheering for them while all the others were seated, not moving, just waiting for Bon. There are tons of bands that are not for me, but I just don’t listen to them, I won’t leave a mean comment bc music and art are subjective and worthy of appreciation 🙂

Yeah I have never understood the point of putting down a band you dont like. What good does it do anyone. Even worse when people actively belittle the fans too!

For decades, my answer would have been Foreigner, but I think they are much more respected now than they used to be.

Time. They never stopped touring for years and years and their main detractors from 40 years ago are now all dead. 😄

    Domo, arigato, Mr. Fox-o.
    That’s right.
    I’m saying.
    Styx.

    Why?
Well now, just about every respectable adult has sat on a “bar stool
    acting like a darn fool.”

I think every band has its secret admirers. Everyone has a group (or song) they listen to but won’t tell their friends they do. There’s a reason Creed sols a shitload of albums. 🤣

I’d say Talking Heads might be one of the most secretly appreciated 80s bands. They were innovative and influential during their time, but I think many people today don’t fully grasp how ahead of the curve they were with their art-rock experimentation, world music influences, and David Byrne’s unique artistic vision.

Hmm I like the ahead of their time thinking 🙂 I wonder how many bands from todays eta is going to be seen in the same way. Ahead of their time, appreciated later!

Great point! There are probably bands right now making music that sounds “weird” today but will be considered genius in 20 years.
The tricky part is we’re too close to see it clearly. What sounds like noise today might be tomorrow’s masterpiece – just ask anyone who first heard punk or grunge. My bet? Some experimental electronic artist currently confusing everyone will be the next “visionary ahead of their time.”

My thoughts on Nickelback were always that they aren’t as bad as people make them out to be, but they aren’t really great either in my opinion. To be fair, though, I really only know the huge hits and haven’t dived deep into their catalog. In my opinion, though, the best thing Nickelback has given the world isn’t even a real Nickelback song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3GpJzMZiXY

The first thing that comes to mind for me is Yellowcard… they’re mostly remembered as a one-hit wonder, and they were disliked in their time in the same way Nickelback was. But every time their one hit (Ocean Avenue, 2003) comes up in conversation, or when I sing it at karaoke, everyone seems to love it. I have several of their full albums, and they have a lot of good stuff, I think.

Another of my favorite bands I feel like should be secretly appreciated this way, but a lot of the dislike they got back in the day seems to have not changed into anything other than genuine dislike today, or apathy at best: Hootie and the Blowfish. I always really liked them. I think they suffered from that curse that has befallen many bands, where their breakout album (Cracked Rear View, 1994) was so good that everything they did after that was disappointing by comparison, combined with the fact that the big hits from that album were overplayed enough to annoy a lot of people.

Step right up and don’t be shy. We’re white punks on dope…. The Tubes. I seem to enjoy music that takes itself less seriously as my guilty pleasure. I had only heard classical for most of my childhood, interspersed with country and western. After so many fugues and tears in your beer you need some humor. I liked Nickelback for a minute or so then got bored. They reminded me of too many other bands.

I never really understood the Nickelback hate. They aren’t my favorite but I know the lyrics to quite a few of their songs and I won’t turn the station if they happen to come on the radio or when I’m jamming to a YT playlist.
